Remote Vendor Management information

What is remote vendor management?

A Remote Vendor Management job involves overseeing and maintaining relationships with third-party vendors while working remotely. Responsibilities typically include selecting vendors, negotiating contracts, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with company standards. This role requires strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills to effectively manage vendors from a distance. Technology plays a key role, as remote vendor managers often use digital tools to track performance and collaborate with internal teams.

What are some common challenges in remote vendor management and how are they addressed?

One of the primary challenges in Remote Vendor Management is maintaining strong relationships and clear communication with vendors who may be located in different regions or time zones. Ensuring accountability and timely resolution of issues can also be more complex when interactions are virtual rather than in-person. To address these challenges, professionals use structured communication schedules, project management tools, and clearly defined service-level agreements (SLAs) to maintain alignment and track performance. Building trust through regular check-ins and transparent processes helps ensure that vendors consistently meet organizational standards and expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote vendor management?

To excel in Remote Vendor Management, you typically need experience in procurement, contract negotiation, and supplier relationship management, often supported by a related bachelor's degree. Familiarity with e-sourcing tools, vendor management systems (VMS), and compliance platforms is valuable, as is certification such as Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM). Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills are essential for building rapport and resolving issues with vendors remotely. These capabilities ensure effective oversight of vendor performance, cost savings, and alignment of vendor services with organizational goals.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned negotiator and relationship builder who enjoys solving complex business challenges and influencing decisions at the executive level. In addition to leading critical supplier negotiations, the Principal will help strengthen procurement capabilities across the organization by sharing best practices, developing negotiation playbooks, mentoring others, and elevating commercial excellence. The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of experience in technology sourcing, procurement, vendor management, enterprise technology sales, or related commercial functions, along with a proven track record of delivering measurable financial results through large-scale technology negotiations and strategic supplier partnerships.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL.

What you'll do:

  • Leads end-to-end negotiation strategy and execution for USAA's largest and most complex technology deals (e.g., cloud, SaaS, software, data, managed services), owning outcomes and value delivery.
  • Owns the commercial strategy for the technology portfolio, shaping deal structures, pricing models, and supplier approaches to maximize enterprise value.
  • Translates business and technology needs into sourcing and negotiation strategies, leading requirements, commercial modeling, supplier evaluation, and executive recommendations.
  • Leads the full lifecycle of strategic sourcing engagements, determining optimal approaches (e.g., competitive events, direct negotiations) and ensuring alignment with business, financial, risk, and regulatory requirements.
  • Applies deep market and product-side insight to negotiations, leveraging understanding of supplier economics, pricing, and sales strategies.
  • Drives demand optimization across the technology portfolio, partnering with stakeholders to challenge requirements, rationalize consumption, and align spend to highest-value business outcomes.
  • Partners cross-functionally (Technology, Finance, Legal, Risk) to align priorities, drive execution, and ensure well-governed, compliant commercial outcomes.
  • Leads complex negotiations and dispute resolution, navigating high-impact, high-visibility situations with suppliers and senior stakeholders.
  • Drives step-change improvements in savings, value realization, and overall deal quality across the technology portfolio.
  • Builds association negotiation capability by developing playbooks, tools, and training, and coaching teams on advanced negotiation strategies and execution.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, providing guidance on critical supplier decisions, risks, and opportunities.
  • Anticipates and mitigates risks across sourcing and contracting activities, ensuring appropriate controls and proactive issue resolution.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

Experiences that will support your success:

  • 10+ years of experience in technology commercial roles, including strategic sourcing, vendor management, enterprise technology sales, or product-side commercial functions.
  • Proven track record personally leading large, complex technology negotiations with top-tier suppliers (e.g., hyperscalers, major SaaS/software providers).
  • Deep understanding of technology pricing models, licensing structures, and supplier economics.
  • Experience operating in high-value, high-visibility deal environments with measurable financial impact.

What sets you apart:

  • US military experience gained through military service or gained as a military spouse / domestic partner
