Marketing & Engagement Copywriter

 

PEOPLE is seeking an experienced Marketing & Engagement Copywriter to support acquisition, engagement, retention, and subscription initiatives for the PEOPLE App. Reporting to the Head of Marketing, PEOPLE App, requires someone who is fluent in direct response copywriting. They will craft high-converting marketing messaging for a variety of channels, including but not limited to email, social, and onsite, with the goal of acquiring and retaining new users.

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer who understands consumer audiences, drives action through persuasive copy, and can adapt messaging across channels, formats, and stages of the customer journey. This role will partner closely with marketing, product, design, editorial, and analytics teams to develop and optimize user-facing communications.

Assignment Details
  • Approximately 35 hours per week

  • Start date: ASAP

  • Duration: 4 months with potential to extend

  • Hourly rate: $35–$50/hour

  • Location: New York, NY (Hybrid; 2–3 days/week preferred) or Remote

Responsibilities
  • Write and optimize copy that drives subscription/member signups, app downloads, and daily habit actions.

  • Develop messaging across email, social, app store assets, push notifications, in-app messaging, landing pages, and onsite placements.

  • Create user-facing product copy, including onboarding experiences, feature announcements, engagement prompts, and subscription messaging.

  • Conceive, pitch, develop, and test new hooks and offers in messaging, including evergreen and timely ideas

  • Review and improve existing marketing and product messaging to increase clarity, engagement, and conversion.

  • Develop compelling CTAs, value propositions, and copy variations to support testing and optimization efforts.

  • Adapt messaging for different audiences, channels, and stages of the customer lifecycle.

  • Ensure all copy aligns with PEOPLE’s voice, editorial standards, and brand guidelines.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to incorporate audience insights, performance data, and testing results into messaging improvements.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years direct response copywriting

  • Proven experience writing copy that drives measurable results

  • Experience crafting copy for a variety of channels, including websites, email, and paid ads

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating conversion-focused work

  • Understanding of audience engagement, retention, and customer lifecycle marketing.

  • Ability to translate audience insights and business goals into effective messaging.

  • Experience using performance data and testing results to refine copy.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with app marketing, mobile engagement, or subscription products.

  • Familiarity with push notifications, onboarding flows, and in-product messaging.

  • Experience supporting A/B testing and optimization programs.

  • Background in media, publishing, entertainment, lifestyle, or consumer brands.
