Remote Tooling Engineer information

What is a remote tooling engineer?

A Remote Tooling Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains software tools and automation systems while working from a remote location. They support development teams by creating solutions that improve workflow efficiency, testing, deployment, and integration processes. These engineers often collaborate with cross-functional teams using communication tools and cloud-based services to deliver and maintain tooling solutions. Their work enables organizations to streamline operations, reduce manual tasks, and improve productivity without requiring onsite presence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote tooling engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Tooling Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, automation, and systems integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, scripting languages (like Python or Bash), cloud platforms, and configuration management tools is essential. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication skills help you collaborate effectively in distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for efficiently building reliable development tools and maintaining workflows across remote environments.

How does a remote tooling engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams in a distributed work environment?

As a Remote Tooling Engineer, you'll frequently work with both development and operations teams to design, implement, and maintain tools that streamline workflows and increase efficiency. Collaboration usually happens through virtual meetings, chat platforms, and collaborative documentation, requiring strong communication and proactive updates. You'll often participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and troubleshooting sessions, making it essential to be comfortable with asynchronous communication and documentation. Building trust and clear channels for feedback are key to successful teamwork in a remote setting.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Engineer (Platform) based in Netherlands.

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you'll help build and evolve the systems that enable engineering teams to deliver software quickly, safely, and reliably at scale. You'll work across cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, developer tooling, and operational workflows. The role combines hands-on engineering with a strong focus on improving developer experience and reducing infrastructure complexity. You'll partner closely with application, security, and infrastructure teams in a highly distributed, asynchronous environment. You'll also explore practical applications of AI and automation to increase engineering productivity and reduce operational toil. This is an opportunity to shape platform capabilities as a product while building reliable foundations for a globally distributed organization.

Accountabilities
  • Design and maintain internal developer tooling, reusable packages, and platform abstractions that provide simple, self-service solutions and reduce operational complexity.
  • Build, operate, and continuously improve automated CI/CD pipelines that enable frequent, safe, and reliable software delivery.
  • Develop and operate AWS cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, with a focus on scalability, availability, security, and cost efficiency.
  • Apply SRE principles, observability practices, and effective incident-management processes to improve reliability, reduce outages, and accelerate recovery.
  • Identify practical opportunities to use AI, automation, and intelligent tooling to improve developer productivity, automate repetitive operational workflows, and reduce engineering toil.
  • Treat the internal engineering organization as a customer by turning recurring pain points into scalable platform capabilities and continuously improving solutions through feedback and metrics.
  • Collaborate closely with application, security, and infrastructure engineers to troubleshoot issues, support incident response, and promote reliable and secure engineering practices.
  • Contribute to a remote-first culture based on asynchronous collaboration, transparency, trust, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, SRE, Infrastructure Engineering, or a comparable production engineering role.
  • Strong software development skills, with the ability to build maintainable automation, tooling, and reusable platform abstractions.
  • Proven hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating production systems on AWS.
  • Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code, ideally using Terraform or an equivalent technology.
  • Practical experience building, operating, and improving CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, and production debugging using tools such as Datadog, Sentry, or comparable platforms.
  • Strong understanding of reliability engineering, incident response, and production operations.
  • A platform-oriented mindset, with a focus on reducing cognitive load for engineering teams and making secure, reliable practices easy to adopt.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly within remote and asynchronous engineering environments.
  • Fluent English and a reliable home internet connection, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with internal developer platforms, golden paths, or self-service infrastructure is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI coding assistants, agents, or AI-powered developer tools for engineering productivity and infrastructure automation is a plus.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails, Harness, Drone, or other modern CI/CD platforms is advantageous.
  • Experience automating Heroku, Render, or similar application platforms through Terraform or scripted workflows is a plus.
  • Experience improving macOS or Linux developer environments through automation and tooling is beneficial.
  • Previous experience working within remote-first, globally distributed teams is valued.
Benefits
  • Fully remote work, with the flexibility to work from anywhere you are legally authorized to work and where your team can collaborate effectively.
  • Role aligned with the +4 / +0 UTC time-zone range.
  • 40 days of paid time off per year, including holidays and vacation, or more where required by local regulations.
  • Mental health and wellbeing support through a dedicated mental well-being service.
  • Monthly wellbeing allowance that can be used across a broad range of eligible wellbeing options.
  • At least three months of paid parental leave for new parents, with job protection for up to 12 months or as required locally.
  • Work-from-home stipend to support laptop and home-office equipment.
  • Inclusive, globally distributed working environment that values diverse perspectives and different ways of working.
  • Flexible, asynchronous collaboration designed to support employees across different locations and cultures.
  • Opportunity to work on high-impact platform engineering challenges involving cloud infrastructure, developer experience, reliability, automation, and AI.
  • A trust-based culture focused on continuous improvement, collaboration, and making meaningful progress.
