What is the difference between Remote Technical Writing vs Remote Content Writing?

AspectRemote Technical WritingRemote Content Writing
Required SkillsTechnical knowledge, clarity, documentation skillsCreativity, SEO, audience engagement
Work EnvironmentTech companies, software firms, engineering teamsMarketing agencies, media outlets, blogs
Common CertificationsTechnical writing certifications, IT backgroundContent marketing, SEO certifications

Remote Technical Writing focuses on creating detailed technical documentation for products and services, often requiring technical expertise. Remote Content Writing involves producing engaging content for marketing, blogs, and websites, emphasizing creativity and SEO. While both roles involve writing skills, they serve different purposes and industries, making them distinct career paths within the remote writing field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote technical writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Technical Writer, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, usually supported by a background in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools like Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Markdown, and content management systems is often required, along with knowledge of version control software. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and meeting deadlines. These abilities ensure that complex information is conveyed clearly and efficiently, supporting user understanding and business goals in a distributed work environment.

What is remote technical writing?

Remote technical writing involves creating instruction manuals, user guides, FAQs, and other supporting documents for products or services, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office. Remote technical writers communicate complex information clearly and concisely, often collaborating with engineers, developers, and other subject matter experts via digital tools. They need strong writing skills, technical understanding, and the ability to work independently. The remote aspect allows for flexibility in schedule and location, making it a popular choice for writers with technical expertise.

How do remote technical writers typically collaborate with subject matter experts and development teams?

Remote technical writers frequently use a variety of digital collaboration tools to communicate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and development teams. Regular video meetings, chat platforms, and shared documentation spaces like wikis or version control systems help bridge the distance. Proactive communication and clear documentation requests are essential, as writers may not have in-person access to SMEs. Building strong virtual relationships and maintaining organized records of feedback and updates are key strategies for success in a remote environment.

Job description

Consor Engineers is seeking a Water/Wastewater Engineer (PE) to join our growing team in Denver, CO. This role is ideal for a licensed professional engineer who wants to take on meaningful technical responsibility, lead project delivery, and contribute to a collaborative, peoplefocused culture. If you are looking for longterm stability, professional development, and the opportunity to shape critical water and wastewater infrastructure, weโ€™d love to meet you.

About the Role

As a Water/Wastewater Engineer at Consor, you will play a key role in planning, designing, and delivering water and wastewater infrastructure projects for municipal clients. You will evaluate system needs, develop engineering solutions, and prepare highquality technical work products, including design plans, reports, and technical analyses. This position provides opportunities for project leadership, client interaction, and mentorship within a supportive and growthoriented environment.

Salary: $100 - 140k (depending on experience) Compensation for candidates with significant experience beyond the minimum requirements may be considered above this range.

Work Arrangement: We value inperson connection and team interaction, so we prefer candidates interested in hybrid or onsite work. We remain open to remote work options for applicants whose background and performance standards make them an excellent match.

  • Lead and support the planning and design of water and wastewater conveyance, treatment, and pumping systems.
  • Develop and review engineering design packages, including plans, specifications, and technical analyses.
  • Prepare engineering reports, master plans, technical memoranda, and feasibility studies.
  • Design and evaluate pipelines, pump stations, lift stations, storage tanks, and treatment facilities including hydraulic analysis and system optimization.
  • Identify and contribute to project pursuit opportunities, including proposal development and participation in project interviews.
  • Serve as a technical mentor to junior engineers, supporting skill development and quality project delivery.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver highquality, clientfocused outcomes.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 4+ years of progressive water and wastewater engineering experience.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and problemsolving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with treatment facility design, process modeling, and permitting.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Experience managing tasks, coordinating with clients, and supporting project delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while also thriving in a teamoriented environment.
โ€ข This hybrid job operates between an office environment and a field environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones and copy machines. May require occasional exposure to work environments that may include inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazard, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water, depending on project requirements.
โ€ข While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, hearing, and occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling. This job may occasionally require operating a company vehicle, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs.
