Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, GitHub, Jira, and cloud-based platforms, as well as remote work best practices, is typically expected. Outstanding self-motivation, adaptability, proactive communication, and time-management skills set top performers apart in remote settings. These skills are crucial for delivering results, fostering innovation, and maintaining alignment within distributed teams.

What are the unique challenges of working at a remote tech startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a remote tech startup often means adapting to fast-paced changes, collaborating across time zones, and staying self-motivated without direct supervision. Communication is key, as teams rely heavily on digital tools to stay connected and aligned on goals. To succeed, it's important to be proactive in seeking feedback, comfortable with ambiguity, and disciplined in managing your time. Embracing flexibility and being open to learning new technologies or processes will help you thrive in this dynamic environment.

What is a remote tech startup?

A remote tech startup is a new technology-based company that operates with a distributed team, meaning employees work from various locations rather than a centralized office. These startups leverage digital tools and platforms to collaborate, communicate, and build products or services. Remote tech startups often benefit from accessing a global talent pool, reducing overhead costs, and offering flexible work arrangements. However, they also face challenges such as coordinating across time zones and maintaining team cohesion.

Job description

We are a growing oil and gas services/ tech startup with three founders and no other employees—this makes you our first non-founder hire. We're looking for a dependable Field Technician to maintain and monitor natural gas engines and associated equipment at remote sites throughout Texas. You will be responsible for routine checks, basic troubleshooting, and ensuring everything operates smoothly. You should be comfortable making independent decisions in the field, and you will have direct communication with the founders to escalate major issues or recommend improvements. About 10NetZero, Inc. We are an oilfield services startup revolutionizing the midstream space by providing a way to bring stranded natural gas to the digital market. Description Key Responsibilities Travel & Field Work: Drive up to 5 hours to remote sites (often with poor cell signal). Occasional overnight stays required; the company covers hotel costs. Equipment Checks: Perform routine inspections on natural gas engines (e.g., fluid levels, filters) and associated equipment. Basic Repairs & Troubleshooting: Carry out minor fixes; elevate more complex issues after initial assessment. Documentation & Reporting: Use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) to track equipment status and communicate updates. Independent Decision-Making: Exercise judgment in the field and keep the operations team informed of critical issues. Requirements Vehicle: A 4WD truck or full-size 4WD SUV (stipend, insurance, and fuel are provided). Mechanical Aptitude: Basic car engine maintenance skills (checking fluids, changing oil). Training will be provided for more advanced tasks. Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required. Experience building computers is a major plus but not mandatory. Physical Capability: Able to lift 80 lbs and work outdoors or in containers under various weather conditions. Schedule Flexibility: Must be willing to work irregular hours as needed, including some weekends and potential off-hours emergencies. Drug Testing & Background Check: Random drug testing and a background check at hiring. Certifications & Training: Company covers H2S certification and any other required training costs. Work Environment & Expectations Outdoors & Remote Locations: Most work happens outside or in containerized equipment setups. Amenities may be limited. Conditions may be hot or cold depending on the time of year. On-Call Possibility: While we plan to hire more people for rotating shifts, you may initially need to respond to some off-hours emergencies. Autonomy: You'll often work alone, troubleshooting on your own before escalating issues. Influence on Culture: As the first non-founder, you'll have a direct impact on forming the team culture and operational processes. Salary Range: $45,000 – $60,000 per year, depending on experience. Vehicle Stipend & Fuel: Company covers monthly stipend, insurance, and fuel expenses. Travel Expenses: Company-paid hotel accommodations for overnight stays. Tools & Gear: Safety equipment and necessary electronics (phone/tablet) provided. You will be required to have your own non-specialty tools. The company will pay for specialty tools and consumables. Training Costs Covered: The company pay for any required H2S certification, safety courses, and any additional training needed. Growth Opportunities: Direct path to a managerial role as we expand post-Series A. Potential for Growth: As we secure our Series A funding, we plan to bring on additional field technicians. If you excel in this role, you will be considered for a management position, helping shape team culture and processes. #J-18808-Ljbffr
