What is a Remote Tank Engineer?

A Remote Tank Engineer is a professional who oversees the design, monitoring, maintenance, and operation of tanks (such as storage tanks or process vessels) from a remote location. They use specialized software and remote monitoring technologies to track tank performance, integrity, and safety without being physically present at the site. Their work often involves analyzing data, diagnosing issues, and coordinating repairs or maintenance activities with on-site teams. Remote Tank Engineers are commonly employed in industries like oil and gas, chemical processing, and water treatment, where tank infrastructure is critical.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Tank Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Tank Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, experience with tank design, inspection, and maintenance, and usually a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software, remote monitoring systems, and certifications such as API 653 for tank inspection are typical requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for coordinating remotely and ensuring safety. These skills and qualifications are vital for maintaining the integrity of storage tanks, minimizing risk, and ensuring compliance with industry standards while working from a remote location.

P5 Consulting Services is recruiting for active Senior Structural Engineer roles and Structural Engineering Technical Lead opportunities with established, privately held civil engineering consulting firms in the Greater Sacramento, Greater Los Angeles areas, UT, ID, and TN

These are structural engineering leadership roles, slightly elevated from generic project engineering positions. The right person will bring structural engineering depth, mentoring ability, client awareness, and reliable judgment to guide technical delivery within multidisciplinary civil engineering environments.

Engineering Scope and Career Value

P5 is selective about the client companies we represent. Our clients are known for stable leadership, strong technical standards, employee well being, transparency, professional development, and long term career growth.

The structural work you'll do may support water systems, wastewater facilities, pump stations, tanks, drainage and flood control infrastructure, transportation improvements, public capital improvement programs, municipal facilities, utility systems, retaining structures, site structures, land development, and construction phase engineering support.

Our opportunities emphasize a career building path with technical visibility, staff development responsibility, client interaction, and the ability to influence how structural services grow within a multidisciplinary civil engineering platform.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Lead structural engineering design and technical delivery for civil infrastructure and public works projects.
  • Serve in responsible charge and review calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  • Guide structural design for concrete, steel, masonry, wood, retaining systems, foundations, equipment supports, tanks, pump stations, site structures, and infrastructure components.
  • Coordinate with civil, water, wastewater, stormwater, transportation, survey, and construction management teams.
  • Direct project scopes, budgets, schedules, design criteria, and client deliverables with sound technical and business judgment.
  • Ensure QA/QC standards, code compliance, and technical leadership across assigned projects.
  • Mentor engineers, designers, and production staff while strengthening collaborative, high performing team cultures.
  • Contribute to proposals, interviews, qualifications, relationship development, and repeat client opportunities.

    Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • PE is required (relocation and in-comity applications may require attention). SE is preferred for some roles.
  • Six to twenty plus years of progressive structural engineering consulting experience is required.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary civil engineering projects is highly valued. Structural specialists are welcome for targeted client needs.
  • Working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and BIM coordination platforms is helpful. Familiarity with RISA 3D, RAM Structural System, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, Mathcad, TEDDS, Enercalc, or similar structural tools is valued. HEC-RAS or related hydraulic modeling exposure may be useful for water resources or flood control related structural work, although it is not required for every client role.
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring staff, coordinating with other disciplines, communicating with clients, and making sound technical decisions.
  • Ability to manage priorities, apply cost and benefit judgment, support client relationships, and contribute to sustainable practice growth.

Job Type, Location, and Compensation

Locations: CA, NV, UT, ID and TN. Work setting varies by client and may include office based or hybrid flexibility depending on the role, client policy, and project needs.
