A Remote Systems Administrator Internship is an entry-level position where interns assist with managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting computer systems and networks for an organization, all while working from a remote location. Interns typically gain hands-on experience with server administration, network configurations, software updates, and security practices under the supervision of experienced IT professionals. This role helps interns develop technical skills and gain exposure to tools and practices commonly used in systems administration. It's an ideal opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in IT to learn in a real-world environment without needing to be onsite.

What are the main challenges faced by remote systems administrator interns, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote systems administrator interns often encounter challenges such as managing time effectively across different projects, ensuring secure access to company systems, and communicating efficiently with distributed teams. To address these, it's important to prioritize tasks using project management tools, follow the organization's security protocols for remote access, and maintain regular communication with supervisors and colleagues via scheduled meetings and collaboration platforms. Being proactive in seeking feedback and support can also help interns overcome obstacles and maximize their learning experience.

About StrongMind
StrongMind is a remote-first education and technology company on a mission to transform learning for students, families, and educators across the country. For more than 25 years, we've partnered with schools and districts to deliver innovative, student-centered learning experiences powered by technology, compassion, and bold thinking.
We believe education should be flexible, human, and built for real life. That belief shapes how we design our products, support our partners, and work together as a team. At StrongMind, you'll find smart people doing meaningful work, a culture rooted in trust and accountability, and leaders who genuinely care about both outcomes and people.
The Team You Will Join
You'll be part of the Information Technology team, working closely with Systems Administrators, Help Desk, Security, Infrastructure, and Engineering teams to ensure the technology that powers StrongMind operates securely and efficiently. This team is responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure, supporting internal users, and enabling the technology that keeps our employees and educational platforms running smoothly.
The team culture is collaborative, innovative, and supportive, and you'll have opportunities to learn, grow, strengthen your technical expertise, and build meaningful impact while partnering across StrongMind and our schools.
The Difference You Will Make
In this role, your work will directly impact internal teams, systems, and business operations by ensuring our IT infrastructure remains reliable, secure, and optimized for performance.
You'll help troubleshoot technical challenges, automate routine processes, improve system reliability, and support the technology that enables our employees to deliver exceptional educational experiences.
A Typical Day Looks Like
While no two days are exactly the same, you can expect to:
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, hardware, software, and virtual machines.
  • Provide Tier 1-2 technical support by resolving hardware, software, networking, and connectivity issues while delivering exceptional customer service to internal employees.
  • Monitor systems, networks, firewalls, backups, and infrastructure health to maintain security, uptime, and overall system performance.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using Python, PowerShell, or Bash to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual work.
  • Collaborate with IT teammates to support Azure and AWS cloud environments, maintain technical documentation, implement security best practices, and contribute to continuous infrastructure improvements.
  • This position requires availability to work core business hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Arizona time, Monday through Friday.

This role balances independent work, collaboration, problem-solving, and execution and is well-suited for someone who enjoys learning new technologies, improving systems, supporting others, and building reliable technical solutions.
Your Expertise Includes
We're looking for someone who brings:
  • 1-3 years of experience in an IT Support, Systems Administrator, or similar infrastructure role.
  • Experience administering Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, along with a solid understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPN technologies.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash to automate routine administrative tasks.
  • Experience supporting virtualization technologies, cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure), firewalls, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and customer service skills, with an eagerness to learn emerging technologies and leverage AI tools to improve workflows and problem-solving.

Bonus points if you also have:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, and AWS Cloud Practitioner.

Our Commitment to Inclusion & Belonging
At StrongMind, we believe the best ideas come from bringing together people with different perspectives, experiences, and ways of thinking. A diverse and inclusive workplace fuels creativity, strengthens collaboration, and helps us build better solutions for the students, families, and communities we serve.
We are committed to welcoming a broad range of talent and encouraging all qualified individuals to apply. We strive to create an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and is empowered to contribute, grow, and do meaningful work.
How We'll Take Care of You
We believe that when people feel supported, they do their best work. At StrongMind, your well-being isn't a perk-it's part of our culture.
Our commitment to you includes:
  • A competitive total compensation package, including medical, dental, vision, and voluntary benefits
  • Well-being that works for real life-from an on-site gym, virtual wellness programs, and wellness coaching to flexible work options for select roles, because your well-being fuels your brilliance
  • Unlimited PTO for exempt roles, plus additional "life happens" days when you need flexibility
  • A fully paid holiday week off at Christmas, so you can truly rest, reset, and reconnect
  • Recognition and rewards that celebrate birthdays, meaningful milestones, legendary work, and community service hours that let you give back
  • Quarterly Town Halls that keep communication transparent, honest, and human
  • Annual social events and traditions we genuinely look forward to-like Halloween celebrations, Wellness Fairs, and other moments that bring our community together

We're intentional about building a workplace where people feel valued, connected, and empowered to thrive-at work and beyond.
