Job description

Location: Remote within the United States

Travel Required: Approximately 2-4 weeks per year

Job Summary

As Director of Engineering, Device Products & Operations, you will oversee software engineering across PatientPoint's device-side product areas - field operations and device management tooling, exam-room patient engagement technology, waiting-room displays, and back-office systems - all running on Android and BrightSign devices in clinical and on-site settings.

You will be the Engineering Manager for a mix of senior Engineering Leads and individual-contributor engineers, owning hiring, performance, and career growth directly, and stepping into the Engineering Lead's technical-direction role yourself where a team needs it.

This is a hands-on role: you'll stay close to the code, contribute directly where it matters, champion AI-assisted and agentic ways of working across your teams, and make credible architecture calls - across Android (including custom Android ROM), AWS (IoT Core, Lambda, Bedrock AgentCore), and JavaScript/React front-ends - alongside staff engineers and PatientPoint's Architecture Review Board.

What You'll Do

  • Own engineering outcomes across PatientPoint's device product areas - field operations tooling, exam-room technology, waiting-room displays, and back-office systems.
  • Serve as the Engineering Manager for a mix of senior Engineering Leads and individual-contributor engineers - owning hiring, performance, and career growth directly - and step into the Engineering Lead's technical-direction role yourself where a team needs it.
  • Stay close to the code: lead code reviews, contribute directly where needed, and guide teams on technical best practices.
  • Champion AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices - in your own work, across your teams' day-to-day development, and in the AI-powered capabilities we build into our products (e.g., automated device diagnostics).
  • Coordinate priorities and dependencies across three or more concurrently active product areas with different tech stacks and team maturity.
  • Represent the device product areas in cross-org architecture reviews (ARB/RFCs) and make architecture trade-off calls alongside staff-level engineers.
  • Help engineers and Engineering Leads grow in their roles and career paths at PatientPoint.
  • Represent engineering as an executive peer to Product and Design leadership in trio-level and product-level planning.
  • Manage a blended team of full-time and contract engineers, onshore and offshore.
  • Partner with senior engineering leadership on organizational design and resourcing, and represent the device product areas' health and staffing needs to executive stakeholders.

What We Need

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years leading engineering teams, with experience owning outcomes across three or more concurrent product areas or technical domains.
  • Experience managing a blended team of senior technical/architectural leads, individual-contributor engineers, and full-time/contract engineers (onshore and offshore) - including direct hiring, performance, and career-growth responsibility.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating software for Android - including custom Android ROMs, Mobile Device Management (MDM) and IoT device communication protocols (e.g., AWS IoT Core, BLE/GATT) - deep enough to credibly evaluate architecture and code from staff-level engineers. Working understanding of the constraints these devices run under: limited memory, storage, and processing power; intermittent network connectivity; remote update and rollback without a technician on site; and fleets spanning legacy to current Android releases.
  • Experience with front-end frameworks (JavaScript or TypeScript), and with the backend services (e.g., Kotlin/HTTP4k, Node/serverless, or equivalent JVM/Node microservices) that support device fleets.
  • Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) in your own workflow, and experience driving adoption of AI-assisted or agentic practices across an engineering team.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related field
  • Experience operating in or leading a product-operating-model / product-trio structure.
  • Comfort partnering with a central architecture function (ARB, RFC process, or equivalent) on org-wide technical standards.
  • Familiarity with Android and BrightSign device-platform tooling - hybrid apps that pair native Android with web/JavaScript content rendered inside the native shell, signage-management platforms (e.g., SignageOS, Broadsign) layered on BrightSign hardware, APK distribution, and OS-upgrade programs.
  • Experience with AI SDLC practices and guiding or contributing to AI-powered product capabilities (e.g., automated device diagnostics, self-healing device operations, or similar agentic/AI-driven features).
  • Experience in vulnerability management and remediation, including SAST/SCA/DAST triage and architecture-level security reviews, across a device fleet or distributed system.
  • Experience in healthcare or another regulated industry, including working knowledge of healthcare compliance requirements (PHI handling, HIPAA awareness) and how they influence architecture decisions for patient-facing devices.
  • Experience developing, tracking, and promoting a data-driven delivery framework such as DORA metrics (Deployment Frequency, Lead Time for Changes, Mean Time to Restore, Change Failure Rate).
  • Hands-on background in AOSP/customized Android ROM work (init/bootstrap-level work, root shell operations, AIDL/IPC).
  • Hands-on experience with agent-orchestration frameworks or patterns (e.g., multi-agent/orchestrator-subagent pipelines, MCP-based tool access, AWS Bedrock AgentCore, Strands Agents, or similar).
  • Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform or similar cross-platform native architectures (shared business logic across Android, JVM/Linux, and other targets).

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Ability to direct and lead teams to deliver product features and continuously improve software quality and development practices.
  • Comfortable being a technical anchor, not just a manager - able to hold your own on architecture trade-offs with staff-level engineers, and to jump into code when needed.
  • Strong ability to develop talent and help engineers grow into bigger roles.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, working effectively across Product, Design, and Architecture teams.
  • Proven ability to establish engineering best practices, operational excellence, and execution discipline while fostering collaboration and innovation.
  • Experience leading through organizational change and team transitions.
