What are some common challenges Remote Subsea Engineers face when working with offshore teams?

Remote Subsea Engineers often face challenges related to communication and coordination due to the physical distance from offshore operations. Time zone differences, limited real-time access to equipment, and reliance on remote monitoring tools can make troubleshooting and decision-making more complex. Strong collaboration skills and familiarity with digital monitoring platforms are essential for effectively supporting offshore teams and ensuring timely resolution of technical issues. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation practices can help bridge the gap and maintain alignment between remote and onsite personnel.

What is the difference between Remote Subsea Engineer vs Remote Offshore Engineer?

AspectRemote Subsea EngineerRemote Offshore Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Marine, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering; certifications in subsea systemsBachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering; offshore safety certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and project planning primarily from onshore locations; occasional site visitsFieldwork on offshore platforms; some remote monitoring and planning
Industry UsageOil & gas, renewable energy, subsea infrastructureOil & gas, renewable energy, offshore construction

Remote Subsea Engineers focus on subsea systems design and analysis, often working remotely with occasional site visits, while Remote Offshore Engineers are more involved in on-site offshore operations and maintenance. Both roles require engineering credentials and industry experience, but their work environments differ significantly.

What is a Remote Subsea Engineer?

A Remote Subsea Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, operating, and maintaining equipment and systems used underwater, particularly in offshore oil and gas operations. They manage remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and other advanced technologies to inspect, repair, and monitor subsea infrastructure from a distance. Their work ensures the safety and reliability of underwater installations while minimizing the need for human divers in hazardous environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Subsea Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Subsea Engineer, you need a solid background in ocean engineering, mechanical or electrical engineering, and experience with subsea systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with subsea control systems, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and industry certifications like IMCA or OPITO are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of underwater operations in challenging offshore environments.

You'll support a multidisciplinary project team developing advanced maritime technologies.

Leidos' Maritime Systems Division is a recognized leader in C4ISR technologies, delivering innovative, mission-critical solutions across sensor networks, unmanned systems, and tactical platforms. We're known for achieving "industry firsts" in the most challenging maritime domains.

  • Oversee multiple subcontractors supporting the subsea components of the program, ensuing interoperability between systems.
  • Support the planning and executing of subsea portions of offshore testing campaigns, including deployment, recovery, and in-water operations.
  • Integrate across the program with other leads, the Program Manager, and customer to ensure program success across all systems.
  • Lead and mentor junior employees, empowering them through assigning tasks, setting priorities, and ensuring accountability in a productive and high-performance environment.
  • Travel when needed (approximately 0-25% time) to support customer needs and attend team meetings.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar technical discipline.
  • 8+ years' total experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with ROVs, subsea tooling, undersea communications, and/or sensor integration.
  • Strong technical focus, ability to support team leadership, and establish strong, collaborative working relationships with government customers, technical staff, senior managers, and peers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Contribute to the successful capture of competitive US DoD contracts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the US Navy programs, contracts, and mission requirements.
  • Experience with offshore or at-sea test operations.
