Steel Construction Project Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Compensation: Starts at $65,000 annually and may be higher depending on experience.
Location: Hanover, PA or Richmond, VA | Remote work available with periodic travel to project sites throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Additional hours and occasional Saturdays may be required based on project schedules.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Steel Construction Project Manager to oversee the successful execution of commercial and industrial steel projects from project kickoff through final completion. This role is responsible for coordinating engineering, detailing, fabrication, delivery, installation, and project closeout activities while ensuring projects remain on schedule, within budget, and aligned with quality and safety standards.
The ideal candidate has experience managing structural steel or miscellaneous metals projects and is comfortable collaborating with clients, subcontractors, fabricators, and field personnel throughout the project lifecycle.
Primary Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
  • Manage multiple steel construction projects through all phases, including preconstruction, fabrication, installation, and closeout.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules to support engineering, submittals, procurement, production, shipping, field installation, and final turnover activities.
  • Review contract documents, drawings, and specifications to verify project scope, material requirements, and execution plans.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiency and project outcomes.
Engineering & Coordination
  • Coordinate detailing, surveying, and project engineering activities.
  • Review shop drawings and technical documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with design teams and field personnel to resolve project challenges and maintain schedule commitments.
  • Participate in Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination efforts, including clash detection and trade coordination.
Contract & Financial Management
  • Prepare and process project documentation including submittals, purchase orders, subcontract agreements, professional service agreements, and contract modifications.
  • Develop schedules of values and oversee monthly billing submissions.
  • Prepare, negotiate, and track change orders, project revisions, credits, and pricing proposals.
  • Monitor project costs and support profitability objectives throughout project execution.
Client & Vendor Relations
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with owners, contractors, suppliers, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, installation sequencing, and site logistics with trade partners.
  • Facilitate communication among all project participants to minimize delays and maintain project momentum.
  • Address project issues promptly and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain complete and organized project records in both digital and physical formats.
  • Support quality control initiatives and ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Issue performance or corrective action notices to subcontractors when required.
  • Promote adherence to company safety expectations and industry best practices.

Qualifications
Required
  • Minimum of 4 years of project management experience within construction, steel fabrication, steel erection, or related industries.
  • Experience managing commercial or industrial construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of steel construction practices, materials, methods, and installation procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform project-related calculations and conduct field verification when necessary.
Preferred
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Project Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with scheduling platforms such as Microsoft Project or Primavera.
  • Familiarity with Tekla, Fabtrol, or similar construction management and detailing software.
  • Knowledge of project cost control, quality assurance, and safety management practices.
  • Experience participating in BIM coordination and clash detection processes.

Work Environment
  • Combination of office, remote, and construction site work environments.
  • Regular exposure to active construction conditions, including dust, welding operations, paint fumes, elevated noise levels, and moving equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to electrical systems and mechanical hazards.
  • Approximately 15% travel to project locations throughout the region.
  • Mileage reimbursement available for approved business travel.
