Remote Structural Engineering Research information

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural engineering researchers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote structural engineering researchers often encounter challenges related to effective communication and collaboration with team members, especially when working across different time zones. Accessing specialized software or large datasets can also be a hurdle due to varying hardware capabilities or internet connectivity. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, schedule regular virtual meetings, and utilize cloud-based platforms for sharing resources and conducting simulations. Proactively reaching out for feedback and participating in online research forums can also help maintain a sense of connection and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Structural Engineering Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Engineering Researcher, you need an advanced degree in structural or civil engineering, strong analytical skills, and a solid understanding of mechanics and materials. Proficiency in structural analysis software (such as SAP2000, ANSYS, or ABAQUS), programming languages like MATLAB or Python, and familiarity with research methodologies are essential. Exceptional written communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in remote research roles. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative, and reliable research outcomes while facilitating effective collaboration and independent work in a remote setting.

What is remote structural engineering research?

Remote structural engineering research involves conducting studies and analyses related to the design, analysis, and behavior of structures, but from a location outside of a traditional laboratory or office—often from home or another remote setting. This work typically uses digital tools, software simulations, and remote collaboration to investigate structural systems, materials, and methods. Researchers may focus on topics such as structural safety, innovative materials, building codes, and disaster resilience. Remote roles often require strong skills in computational modeling, data analysis, and virtual communication.

What is the difference between Remote Structural Engineering Research vs Remote Civil Engineering Design?

AspectRemote Structural Engineering ResearchRemote Civil Engineering Design
CredentialsEngineering degree, structural engineering certificationsEngineering degree, civil engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, remote collaborationDesign firms, consulting companies, remote project sites
Industry UsageAcademic research, structural analysis, material testingProject planning, infrastructure design, site development

Remote Structural Engineering Research focuses on analyzing and testing structural systems, often within academic or research settings, requiring specialized certifications. In contrast, Remote Civil Engineering Design involves creating infrastructure plans and designs, typically for construction projects. Both roles may be performed remotely but serve different industry needs and require distinct skill sets.

Job description

Data Analyst | Software Engineering Track

AcuityMD is a software and data platform that accelerates access to medical technologies. We help MedTech companies understand how their products are used, why customers vary, and identify opportunities for physicians to better serve their patients. Each year, the FDA approves ~6,000 new medical devices. Our platform helps MedTech companies get these products to physicians more effectively so they can improve patient care with the latest technology. We're backed by Benchmark, Redpoint, ICONIQ Growth, and Ajax Health.

In this role, you'll investigate customer questions about the data that powers critical business decisions while building the technical foundation for a career in software engineering. As part of our Software Engineering Track, you'll become an expert in AcuityMD's data platform, develop advanced SQL and Python skills, learn modern AI-assisted development practices, and partner closely with experienced engineers to improve our products. Team members who demonstrate strong technical growth and engineering fundamentals will have the opportunity to transition into Junior Software Engineer roles.

Team Mission

The Data Team is on a mission to represent medical reality by transforming raw data into products that directly generate value for customers and help bring cutting-edge medical technology to the patients who need it most. We thrive on the challenge of turning complex healthcare data into simple, trusted, and actionable insights while continuously improving the quality and intelligence of our platform.

As part of this team, you'll build deep expertise in our data assets while partnering closely with engineers and product teams to strengthen the accuracy, reliability, and customer impact of everything we deliver.

ResponsibilitiesCustomer Data Investigation
  • Investigate customer questions about data displayed throughout the AcuityMD platform using SQL.
  • Research issues end-to-end, identify root causes, and validate findings across multiple data sources.
  • Distinguish between expected platform behavior, customer education opportunities, and true product defects.
  • Communicate findings clearly to Customer Success, Support, and customers when appropriate.
  • Create detailed engineering tickets with reproduction steps, supporting evidence, and root-cause analysis.
Platform & Product Improvement
  • Build deep expertise in AcuityMD's data model, business logic, and data pipelines.
  • Partner closely with Engineering, Product, Customer Success, and Support to improve platform quality and customer trust.
  • Identify recurring issues and opportunities to improve data quality, tooling, and operational processes.
  • Help Engineering validate fixes and ensure customer issues are fully resolved.
Software Engineering Track
  • Expand your technical skills in Python, AI-assisted development, Git, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Learn how production software is designed, built, tested, and maintained by working alongside experienced software engineers.
  • Take on increasingly technical projects as your skills grow.
  • Build the technical foundation needed to transition into a Junior Software Engineer role through demonstrated performance and technical development.
Your Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or another quantitative discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 0-2 years of professional experience. Recent graduates and candidates with relevant internship experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience writing SQL to analyze or investigate data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate ambiguous questions and identify root causes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity, ownership, and a passion for learning new technologies.
  • Interest in building a long-term career in software engineering.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced startup environment.
Nice to Haves
  • Experience with Google BigQuery or other modern cloud data warehouses.
  • Experience writing Python.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as ChatGPT, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Experience working with large analytical datasets.
  • Exposure to Git, software development workflows, or programming through internships, coursework, or personal projects.

AcuityMD is committed to providing highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. The compensation offered for this role will be based on multiple factors such as location, the role's scope and complexity, candidate experience, and market data. Base salary range: $80,000-$100,000 USD.

You must have an eligible work permit in the USA to be considered for this position.
