Job description

Principal, Large-Scale Development

Oakland, CA or Remote
Full-time

Energy is the binding constraint on human progress. Solar and storage are the lowest cost sources of new generation, but the conventional project delivery model has not changed in 30 years and deployment cannot keep pace with demand.

Planted is the execution layer between a parcel of land and a powered facility. We digitize sites, optimize designs, and deploy robots to build the lowest cost and fastest new power systems at the speed of manufacturing.

We're expanding our team of ambitious, curious, and hands-on engineers and operators who want to accelerate that transition. Come take ownership of large parts of our product, company, and business development as we help power the world with 100% clean and abundant energy.

About The Role

We are hiring a Principal, Large-Scale Development to own and close large-scale commercial opportunities across utility-scale developers, IPPs, large-load customers, and capital partners.

This is a deal-focused business development role. You will carry a pipeline, work complex multi-stakeholder transactions, and establish Planted as the default execution layer for the world's largest power users. The person we're looking for has closed infrastructure transactions including project M&A, tax equity, long-term offtake, or portfolio development, and has the network and judgment to originate new ones. You've worked deals where the development cycle is long, the counterparties are sophisticated, and the margin for error is low.

The salary range for this full-time position is $160,000 - $230,000 plus stock options and benefits. Pay within the range is based on candidate experience, job-specific skills, education, and work location. The target experience for the position is 7+ years.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Drive Market Expansion: Proactively prospect and engage new opportunities through outreach and targeted networking with utility-scale developers, IPPs, hyperscalers, and large-load customers; navigate complex enterprises to identify key decision-makers and drive the adoption of Planted's technology solution
  • Own the pipeline: set targets, manage relationships, and drive revenue at the portfolio level, not just project by project
  • Embed Planted early: get Planted into baseline technical and financing assumptions before projects go to market
  • Define the go-to-market: this playbook is being written; you'll have direct input on which segments, deal structures, and partnership models we pursue
  • Translate market signal: bring real constraints from developers and capital partners back into product and pricing decisions
  • Structure and close: navigate complex deal closures by aligning developers with IPP, financing, and tax equity needs
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 7+ years in infrastructure project development, energy M&A, or power project origination
  • Proven success in prospecting and managing a complex enterprise sales cycle with large-scale entities; ability to articulate a compelling value proposition that converts new prospects into long-term partners
  • Demonstrated track record closing $10M+ infrastructure transactions with complex development cycles
  • Familiarity with project finance structures - tax equity, construction debt, offtake, or portfolio M&A
  • Technical fluency in solar PV, BESS, and power system architecture sufficient to engage credibly with developers and design engineers
  • Strong existing network across utility-scale developers, IPPs, or capital providers in the energy sector
  • Comfortable operating without a fully defined playbook in a fast-moving market
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Background in energy investment banking, infrastructure M&A advisory, or project finance
  • Engineering degree or equivalent technical foundation
  • MBA or equivalent strategic finance experience

*A note on qualifications: Many people only apply for jobs if they believe they can perform every task in the job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job and will consider equivalent combinations of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications. If you are interested in applying, we encourage you to think broadly about your background and skill set for the role.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Mostly desk work using standard office equipment
  • The position requires travel for customer and business meetings, events and trade shows, and company-wide meetings
What We Offer
  • 11 paid company holidays and flexible Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Company-paid in-office lunches
  • Stock options
  • Medical, vision, dental, and other benefits
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • 401(k)
  • A chance to have an empowered, meaningful, and early role in climate
This will be a great fit if:
  • You want to solve challenging problems
  • You are biased towards action and focus on the vital work that drives the most impact
  • You prioritize the physical and psychological safety of yourself and those around you
  • You are humble, embrace change, and deliver and receive candid feedback
  • You are optimistic about the future and can make tough decisions to help get there
  • You have high expectations and coach, develop, and make time to help others

Planted is an equal opportunity employer committed to growing inclusively, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, medical condition, age, or veteran status. However you identify, or whatever background you bring with you, please apply. We look forward to hearing from you.
