What Is the Job of Remote Software Developers?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

Remote Software Developers focus on creating software applications and systems, requiring programming skills and software architecture knowledge. Remote Web Developers specialize in designing and building websites and web applications, often with expertise in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. While both roles involve coding and can be remote, their primary focus and skill sets differ, making it important to choose the role that aligns with your expertise and career goals.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

What is a Remote Software Developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

Assignment Duration: Through September 30, 2027

Employment Requirement: No C2C arrangements or third-party staffing agency submissions will be accepted

???? Mandatory Experience Requirement – Read Before Applying

Applicants must meet all requirements below or will not be considered:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Direct, hands-on experience implementing Strategy Customer Managed Cloud, formerly MicroStrategy CMC

  • Experience deploying Strategy CMC within a Red Hat OpenShift environment

  • Strong OpenShift, Kubernetes, Linux, and container administration experience

  • Experience building and supporting enterprise application containers through production deployment

  • Seven or more years of directly applicable enterprise software experience

  • Ability to work remotely during standard Mountain Time business hours

Candidates whose experience is limited to OpenShift or Kubernetes administration without direct Strategy CMC implementation experience are not a fit for this position.

Impact

LANL is transitioning from an on-premises MicroStrategy environment that is approaching end of support to a new Strategy Customer Managed Cloud platform. The selected consultant will play a central role in building, configuring, and deploying the new CMC environment on LANL-managed Red Hat OpenShift infrastructure.

This position will also support the platform after production deployment and mentor LANL middleware personnel so they can assume long-term administration of both the OpenShift environment and the Strategy CMC platform.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the installation, configuration, testing, and production deployment of Strategy Customer Managed Cloud

  • Deploy and configure Strategy CMC within a Red Hat OpenShift container platform

  • Build and manage the containers required to support the Strategy CMC environment

  • Configure the new environment to support existing on-premises Strategy reports, dashboards, applications, security settings, and ERP-related functionality

  • Validate application functionality, connectivity, security, performance, and production readiness

  • Perform Strategy CMC configuration, troubleshooting, tuning, patching, maintenance, and upgrades

  • Provide ongoing operational support following production deployment

  • Maintain the Strategy application and supporting containerized infrastructure

  • Diagnose and resolve application, container, integration, connectivity, and performance issues

  • Establish procedures for platform monitoring, maintenance, incident response, backup, recovery, and upgrades

  • Develop technical documentation, operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, and administration standards

  • Mentor LANL middleware personnel on Strategy CMC and OpenShift administration

  • Deliver structured knowledge transfer to support the transition of operational responsibilities to LANL staff

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, cybersecurity, ERP, application, identity-management, and management teams

  • Communicate technical risks, implementation status, and recommended solutions to stakeholders

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Science, Business Management, or a related discipline

  • Seven or more years of directly applicable experience implementing and supporting complex enterprise application platforms

  • Extensive hands-on experience deploying and administering Strategy Customer Managed Cloud in production environments

  • Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting, and supporting Strategy CMC

  • Experience deploying and operating Strategy CMC on Red Hat OpenShift

  • Direct experience as an OpenShift operator or administrator

  • Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, Linux, containers, and enterprise container platforms

  • Experience migrating or enabling existing Strategy or MicroStrategy reports, dashboards, applications, and security configurations within a CMC deployment

  • Strong understanding of Strategy architecture, platform services, and operational best practices

  • Experience supporting enterprise analytics, reporting, business-intelligence, or ERP environments

  • Demonstrated experience leading software implementations from initial deployment through production support

  • Experience developing technical documentation and operational procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor technical staff and provide knowledge transfer

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

Preferred Background
  • Experience migrating an on-premises MicroStrategy environment to Strategy Customer Managed Cloud

  • Experience integrating Strategy with enterprise identity, authentication, authorization, and security services

  • Experience supporting highly available analytics or business-intelligence platforms

  • Experience with platform monitoring, disaster recovery, backup, restoration, and performance optimization

  • Red Hat OpenShift certification

  • Kubernetes certification

  • DOE, NNSA, federal government, national laboratory, or other highly regulated enterprise experience

  • Current or prior DOE Q Clearance or another federal security clearance

Work Environment
  • Fully remote position

  • Monday–Friday schedule aligned with Mountain Time

  • LANL equipment will be shipped to the selected candidate

  • No travel, driving, or onsite work is anticipated

  • No on-call or overtime requirement

  • Assignment is expected to continue through September 30, 2027

  • Extension or conversion is not anticipated because this role supports a defined bridge solution

Why This Role

This is a high-impact opportunity to lead the deployment of a mission-critical enterprise analytics platform for one of the nation's premier national laboratories. You will have direct ownership of the Strategy CMC implementation, help establish a stable production environment, and prepare LANL personnel to manage the platform successfully after the transition.

The ideal candidate can enter the project, quickly assess the environment, build the required containers, complete the Strategy CMC installation, stabilize production operations, and effectively mentor the internal LANL team.
