What is remote security?

Remote security jobs are positions in the cybersecurity field that can be performed from any location, typically outside a traditional office environment. These roles involve protecting computer systems, networks, and data from cyber threats, often using specialized tools and software. Common responsibilities include monitoring for security breaches, responding to incidents, and ensuring systems comply with security standards. Remote security professionals might work for companies directly, for managed security service providers, or as consultants. This flexibility allows organizations to access global talent and enables professionals to work from home or other remote locations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote security roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote security professionals often encounter challenges such as staying updated on the latest cyber threats, ensuring secure communication across distributed teams, and maintaining visibility into remote endpoints. To address these issues, it's important to leverage advanced monitoring tools, participate in regular security training, and establish clear protocols for incident response. Collaboration with IT, compliance, and other security team members is essential, typically facilitated through secure communication platforms and regular virtual meetings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote security specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Security Specialist, you need a thorough understanding of cybersecurity principles, risk assessment, and network security protocols, often demonstrated through a degree in computer science or a related field and certifications such as CISSP or CEH. Familiarity with security information and event management (SIEM) tools, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and remote access technologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for proactively identifying threats, protecting remote assets, and ensuring seamless collaboration with distributed teams.

What is the difference between Remote Security vs Remote Security Analyst?

Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcare, governmentSecurity firms, IT departments, corporate cybersecurity teams
Job FocusImplementing security measures, managing security toolsAnalyzing security threats, monitoring systems, incident response

Remote Security and Remote Security Analyst roles both require cybersecurity certifications and often share a remote work environment within various industries. However, Remote Security focuses on implementing and managing security measures, while Remote Security Analysts primarily analyze threats and respond to security incidents. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and career goals.

Can remote security guards work from home?

Remote security guards can work from home if their role involves monitoring security systems, surveillance cameras, or managing access controls remotely. These positions typically require specialized software, communication tools, and sometimes certifications, and may involve shift work to ensure 24/7 coverage. Not all security guard roles are suitable for remote work, especially those requiring physical patrols or on-site presence.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Team Lead - Email Security (Imunify Email & Email Gateway) based in Netherlands.

This role offers the opportunity to lead a highly skilled engineering team responsible for building and operating advanced email security solutions used by hosting providers worldwide. You will combine technical leadership, people management, and hands-on engineering to drive reliable product delivery and continuous improvement. The position requires a strong understanding of distributed systems, security-focused engineering, and production operations. You will guide architectural decisions, improve engineering practices, and help the team scale through effective collaboration and AI-assisted development workflows. Working in a fully remote environment, you will have ownership over product reliability, technical direction, and team growth. This is an ideal opportunity for an engineering leader who enjoys solving complex challenges while staying close to technology.

Accountabilities:

As an Engineering Team Lead, you will oversee the delivery, technical evolution, and operational excellence of an email security product line. You will lead a distributed engineering team while remaining actively involved in architecture, code quality, production reliability, and team development.

  • Lead and mentor a senior engineering team, supporting career growth, performance development, hiring, onboarding, and technical coaching.
  • Manage engineering delivery by translating product priorities into realistic plans, sequencing work, tracking dependencies, and maintaining predictable release cycles.
  • Own engineering quality standards, ensuring reliable releases through testing practices, measurable performance indicators, rollback strategies, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive technical direction by reviewing architecture, approving design decisions, evaluating build-versus-buy options, and guiding scalable solutions.
  • Maintain production reliability by overseeing SLOs, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and security-focused operational practices.
  • Participate in hands-on engineering activities including design reviews, code reviews, technical investigations, production debugging, and complex problem solving.
  • Act as an incident leader during critical product issues, coordinating response efforts, communication, remediation, and post-incident improvements.
  • Establish effective remote collaboration practices based on documentation, transparency, asynchronous communication, and durable technical decisions.
  • Promote AI-assisted engineering practices by coaching the team on effective use of coding agents, prompt-driven workflows, and quality review of AI-generated solutions.
  • Collaborate with product leadership to identify technical risks, resolve capacity challenges, and align engineering execution with business priorities.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader with strong technical depth, proven people management skills, and the ability to operate complex production systems. You should be comfortable working across backend technologies, infrastructure, security, and distributed environments.

  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, including at least 2+ years leading engineering teams or managing engineers.
  • Proven experience delivering and operating distributed backend services in production environments.
  • Strong Linux background with the ability to review production code and troubleshoot live systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Go and/or Python development, including understanding of backend architecture and service reliability.
  • Experience making architectural decisions within complex technical domains and quickly developing expertise in new areas.
  • Strong knowledge of observability and data tools such as Grafana, Elasticsearch/Kibana, Redash, or equivalent platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering leadership practices including one-on-ones, performance discussions, hiring, and mentoring.
  • Experience working with AI-assisted or agentic development workflows, or strong motivation to adopt and lead these practices.
  • Professional proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Availability to work aligned with European time zones.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with email infrastructure including SMTP, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, reverse DNS, IP reputation, warm-up processes, RBLs, and feedback loops.
  • Familiarity with open-source email technologies such as Rspamd, SpamAssassin, Postfix, Exim, or Halon.
  • Experience with hosting platforms and control panels such as cPanel/WHM, Plesk, or similar environments.
  • Understanding of machine learning workflows, training data quality, evaluation metrics, and detection model optimization.
  • Experience managing incidents, escalations, and communication with external partners.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote work with flexible working hours and the ability to work from anywhere worldwide.
  • Opportunity to lead challenging projects in cybersecurity, infrastructure, and email protection.
  • Strong focus on professional development and continuous learning.
  • Paid 24 vacation days per year, 10 national holidays, and unlimited sick leave.
  • Private medical insurance support.
  • Co-working space and gym/sports reimbursement.
  • Dedicated education budget for courses, certifications, and skill development.
  • Opportunity to receive recognition and rewards for innovative ideas with patent potential.
  • Collaborative environment with globally distributed teams and modern engineering practices.
