As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote security clearance sponsorship in the United States is $122,890.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,000.00 and $142,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is remote security clearance sponsorship?

Remote Security Clearance Sponsorship refers to the process where an employer supports an employee or job candidate in obtaining a security clearance for a position that can be performed remotely. This sponsorship is necessary because individuals typically cannot apply for security clearances on their own; a sponsoring organization must initiate the process. The clearance allows the individual to access classified information while working remotely, following strict security protocols. The process includes background checks, interviews, and sometimes polygraph tests, depending on the level of clearance required.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in a remote position with security clearance sponsorship?

To thrive in a remote role requiring security clearance sponsorship, candidates typically need a relevant educational background, strong attention to detail, and experience in their specific field (such as IT, engineering, or administration). Familiarity with security protocols, government compliance systems, and tools like encrypted communication platforms is often required, along with the ability to obtain or maintain necessary security clearances. Excellent communication, integrity, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for working independently and handling sensitive information. These skills and qualities ensure trustworthiness, compliance, and effective performance in high-security, distributed work environments.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working remotely under security clearance sponsorship?

One of the main challenges for remote employees with security clearance sponsorship is maintaining strict compliance with security protocols in a home or off-site environment. This often means setting up secure workspaces, following stringent IT and communication guidelines, and sometimes dealing with limitations on where and how sensitive information can be accessed. Additionally, remote work may require extra coordination with IT and security teams to ensure all digital tools and networks meet clearance standards. Open communication with your employer about expectations and regular training on security best practices can help mitigate these challenges.

Assistant Facility Security Officer (AFSO)

We are seeking a seasoned, motivated, and detail-oriented Assistant Facility Security Officer (AFSO) to support multiple clients across the United States. This is a part-time, remote position for a security professional who can work independently, quickly adapt to client-specific requirements, and consistently provide high-quality industrial security support during established business hours, Monday through Friday, based on client needs.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in industrial security, be experienced with DCSA systems and processes, and be comfortable supporting a range of security requirements for both possessing and non-possessing facilities. Travel is expected to be minimal to none.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct, prepare for, and support Security Vulnerability Assessments (SVAs) and other DCSA-related security reviews, as required.
  • Advise client leadership and internal stakeholders on security requirements, violations, and corrective actions to maintain compliance with the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM) and other applicable regulations.
  • Prepare, maintain, and manage required security documentation, records, and forms, including personnel security files for employees, consultants, and contractors.
  • Conduct self-inspections and evaluate internal security processes to ensure ongoing compliance with NISPOM and related security requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day security support for collateral, sensitive, and SCI activities.
  • Conduct initial security briefings, annual refresher training, and security awareness training for cleared and uncleared personnel, including insider threat awareness.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for visit authorization requests (VARs) and maintain strong working relationships with client security representatives and contract personnel.
  • Support onboarding activities by administering clearance transfers, initiating security submissions, and maintaining personnel records in applicable government systems.
  • Manage and maintain personnel security actions within DISS, NISS, NBIS, and related security platforms.
  • Support clients with facility clearance sponsorship, FOCI mitigation, compliance efforts, and DCSA audit readiness activities.
  • Assist in the administration and maintenance of Foreign Ownership, Control, or Influence (FOCI) mitigation measures, agreements, and associated reporting requirements, as applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must possess an active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Must have 3+ years of experience providing FSO, AFSO, CSSO, or related industrial security support for a government contractor supporting Department of Defense or Intelligence Community programs.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of NISPOM requirements and related government security regulations.
  • Must be seasoned and fully proficient in the use of DCSA systems and processes at the time of hire.
  • Demonstrated experience with personnel security, facility clearance processes, eApp, and government security systems such as DISS, NISS, and NBIS.
  • Experience supporting DCSA inspections/audits, facility clearance sponsorship, and FOCI mitigation activities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and adapt quickly to client-specific requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of relevant FSO training courses, including:
    • IS020.CU – Non-Possessing Facilities
    • IS030.CU – FSO Program Management for Possessing Facilities
    • ITPSO training
  • Knowledge of ACCS.
  • Current membership in NCMS.
  • Industrial Security Professional (ISP) certification.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and client personnel.

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Part-time
  • Location: Remote
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, based on client-specific requirements and time zones
