The Remote Hands - Fiber Infrastructure Lead is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for the planning, installation, testing, documentation, and ongoing management of fiber infrastructure within a mission-critical data center environment. This role serves as the site site subject-matter expert (SME) for fiber connectivity and interconnection services, while also supporting Remote Hands activities as part of standard data center operations.
The Fiber Infrastructure Lead performs and oversees complex fiber installations and cross-connects, ensures work is completed to company and industry standards, and provides training and guidance to Data Center Facility Technicians. The individual in this role is also expected to cross-train with the Data Center Facility Technician position and maintain the ability to perform all functions of that role as operational needs require.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fiber Infrastructure Installation and Management (Primary Responsibility)
  • Perform, lead, and oversee fiber infrastructure installations throughout the data center, including:
    • Fiber trunk installations between meet-me rooms (MMRs), cabinets, cages, and data halls
    • Installation, labeling, dressing, and documentation of fiber patch panels
    • Fiber cross-connect installations, modifications, and removals
  • Install, terminate, test, certify, and troubleshoot fiber cabling and connectivity using approved tools and test equipment.
  • Ensure all fiber work complies with company standards, structured cabling best practices, safety requirements, and applicable specifications.
  • Build, manage, and maintain fiber connectivity records using approved inventory, documentation, and ticketing systems.
  • Maintain accurate and auditable documentation for fiber inventory, ports, panels, pathways, and customer interconnections.
  • Respond to fiber-related service requests, incidents, and outages and support restoration efforts as required.

Leadership, Training, and Oversight
  • Serve as the site-level SME for fiber infrastructure, interconnections, and physical-layer connectivity.
  • Train, coach, and mentor Data Center Facility Technicians to safely and consistently perform fiber installations and cross-connect work.
  • Establish and reinforce standard methods for fiber installation, labeling, testing, and documentation.
  • Coordinate and oversee vendor-performed fiber installations and ensure compliance with safety, quality, and procedural requirements.
  • Inspect and validate completed fiber work for accuracy, workmanship, and documentation completeness.

Cross-Training and Facility Operations Support
  • Cross-train with the Data Center Facility Technician role and maintain proficiency to perform all associated duties when required.
  • Support data center operational activities, including routine inspections, basic troubleshooting, and coordinated incident response.
  • Assist with equipment moves, adds, changes, and decommissions where fiber or physical infrastructure involvement is required.

Remote Hands and Operational Support
  • Provide Remote Hands support for customer and internal requests, including cable tracing, visual verification, cross-connect execution, and physical component handling.
  • Support incident response and maintenance activities by assisting with diagnostics, stabilization efforts, communication, and documentation.
  • Coordinate work activities with remote operations, engineering, and operations control center (OCC) teams.

Safety, Compliance, and Documentation
  • Comply with all company safety, security, and compliance requirements, including LOTO, JHAs, and site access controls.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and compliant cabling pathways, equipment areas, and workspaces.
  • Follow established change management, MOP/SOP, and documentation procedures.
  • Participate in required safety training, operational readiness activities, audits, and drills.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical, vocational, or telecommunications education preferred.
  • Hands-on experience installing, terminating, testing, and overseeing fiber infrastructure and cross-connects in data center environment.
  • Strong knowledge of structured fiber cabling systems, standards, panels, terminations, and pathways.
  • Proficiency with fiber test equipment, including power meters, inspection tools, and certification testers.
  • Ability to train and mentor others in technical procedures and best practices.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and technical inventory management skills.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined environments.
  • Availability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in multi-tenant or colocation data center environments.
  • Experience with fiber splicing, trunk builds, and high-density fiber deployments.
  • Familiarity with interconnection provisioning processes and physical network inventory systems.
  • Experience coordinating and overseeing vendor or contractor-performed fiber installations.
  • Exposure to data center mechanical, electrical, and life-safety systems through cross-training or operational support.

  • This is a 24/7/365 role with rotating shifts, weekend and holiday coverage, and participation in on-call rotations.

  • Occasional travel to other Edged Data Centers or customer sites may be required.
