What is a Remote Safe Scrum Master?

A Remote Safe Scrum Master is a professional who facilitates Agile practices and processes for teams working within the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), specifically in a remote or distributed work environment. Their responsibilities include coaching teams on Agile principles, removing impediments, and ensuring collaboration and communication among team members who may not be co-located. They also help teams deliver value through effective ceremonies, such as daily stand-ups and sprint planning, adapted for virtual settings. Additionally, they often coordinate with other Scrum Masters and stakeholders to support alignment across multiple Agile teams.

What is the difference between Remote Safe Scrum Master vs Remote Agile Coach?

AspectRemote Safe Scrum MasterRemote Agile Coach
CertificationsCertified ScrumMaster (CSM), SAFe certificationsSAFe Program Consultant (SPC), Agile certifications
Work EnvironmentFacilitates Scrum teams, manages sprints, removes impedimentsAdvises multiple teams, develops Agile practices, trains staff
Industry UsageCommon in software development, IT, tech companiesUsed across various industries adopting Agile at scale

The Remote Safe Scrum Master focuses on facilitating Scrum teams within the SAFe framework, ensuring smooth sprint execution. In contrast, a Remote Agile Coach provides broader Agile guidance across teams and departments, often working on Agile transformation initiatives. Both roles require Agile certifications and are vital in Agile environments, but their scope and responsibilities differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote SAFe Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote SAFe Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile and Scrum frameworks, experience with scaled agile methodologies like SAFe, and often a SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) certification. Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Confluence, and virtual collaboration platforms is crucial for managing remote teams and workflows. Strong facilitation, servant leadership, and clear communication skills help foster team engagement and resolve conflicts in a distributed environment. These skills ensure effective delivery, alignment with agile principles, and high-performing teams despite physical distance.

How does a Remote Safe Scrum Master effectively facilitate collaboration among distributed Agile teams?

As a Remote Safe Scrum Master, fostering collaboration among geographically dispersed teams involves utilizing digital tools for communication, running virtual ceremonies (such as daily stand-ups and retrospectives), and creating transparent processes for feedback. You’ll often coordinate across time zones, ensuring all team members are engaged and informed. Building trust and a sense of shared responsibility is key, so proactive communication and regular check-ins are essential. Emphasizing visual management tools and maintaining clear documentation help keep everyone aligned with project goals and Agile practices.

Description

SAIC is seeking an Agile Scrum Master and Project Engineer to guide day to day Agile execution for CMCC engineering teams. Operating under the Agile Lead, this role provides team level Agile facilitation, sprint organization, and engineering workflow coordination. The Agile Project Engineer ensures sprint commitments align with System Integration Process (SIP) requirements, facilitating collaboration between software, integration, DSOP, cloud, test, and cyber teams to maintain predictable, highquality delivery. SAIC is a trusted leader in delivering advanced command and control capabilities across the Department of the Air Force, bringing deep expertise in how cutting edge technologies are engineered, secured, and delivered to the fight. At the center of this mission, the Common Mission Control Center (CMCC) unifies data, sensors, mission applications, cloud based services, and emerging AI enabled automation to give warfighters a decisive edge—turning complex, multidomain information into fast, clear, and actionable decisions in the moments that matter most. The CMCC System Facilitator contract positions SAIC to accelerate how new capabilities are integrated, tested, secured, and transitioned into operational use, working side by side with operators, engineers, Capability Providers, and government teams to ensure every delivery strengthens mission readiness. This effort offers the chance to directly shape how the Air Force sees, decides, and acts across all domains—making a tangible and immediate impact on warfighter effectiveness.

This role will be located in Chantilly, VA, Beale AFB, CA or Colorado Springs, CO and will be hybrid remote.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Scrum ceremonies (Daily Stand‑ups, Sprint Planning, Backlog Refinement, Reviews, Retrospectives) ensuring structured, outcomes‑driven execution.
  • Work with Product Owners to refine user stories, acceptance criteria, and priority alignment with SIP milestones.
  • Remove or escalate team‑level impediments; coordinate with the Agile Lead for issues.
  • Track and report sprint metrics (velocity, throughput, cycle time, defect trends) and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain Jira boards, workflows, dashboards, filters, and automation rules to support Agile transparency and flow.
  • Help teams define and meet “Definition of Ready/Done” criteria, ensuring modeling, test, documentation, and security steps align with SIP gates.
  • Coordinate cross‑functional dependencies with Cloud, Cyber, DSOP, Integration, and Test teams to ensure sprint deliverables meet release timelines.
  • Assist technical teams with requirements clarification, interface management, and engineering task breakdown.
  • Support PI Planning preparation, team breakouts, and alignment of sprint goals to Program Increment or Agile Release Train-level objectives.
  • Promote Agile maturity through coaching, continuous improvement, and adoption of DevSecOps practices.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • TS clearance; Ability to obtain TS/SCI required to maintain employment.
  • US citizenship.
  • Bachelors and five (5) years or more experience; OR Masters and three (3) years or more experience; OR PhD and 0 years related experience.
  • 3–5+ years of Scrum Master, Agile Project Engineer, or Agile facilitator experience for technical teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of Agile/Scrum, Kanban, and engineering workflow management.
  • Hands on experience configuring and administering Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating with engineering teams in DevSecOps, integration, cloud, or test environments.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to manage sprint commitments, identify risks, and align engineering execution with program milestones.
  • Ability to work in classified and multienclave environments.

Desired Qualifications & Experience:

  • CSM, PSM, SAFe Scrum Master, or SAFe Practitioner certification.
  • Experience using Agile metrics analytics and forecasting tools.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps concepts, or SIPaligned workflows.
  • Experience coordinating multiteam Agile delivery with crossfunctional technical groups.
  • Additional Agile certifications (SAFe Advanced SM, ACSM, RTE-supportive credentials).
