What are Remote Radio News jobs?

Remote Radio News jobs involve reporting, producing, or broadcasting news content for radio stations or digital platforms while working from a location outside of a traditional newsroom, often from home. These roles can include news anchors, reporters, producers, and editors who gather information, conduct interviews, write scripts, and deliver news segments virtually. This flexibility allows radio professionals to cover stories from a wider geographic area and maintain work-life balance. Remote radio news professionals use digital tools to record, edit, and transmit audio content efficiently. The growing trend toward remote work has made these positions increasingly accessible and popular in the broadcasting industry.

Excellent verbal communication, adaptability, and the ability to work independently are key soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are important to deliver accurate, timely, and engaging news content from remote locations while maintaining professional broadcast standards.

Job description

About the Role

Marketplace and American Public Media recently formed the Public Radio Business

Network to deepen our editorial relationships with our 800+ partner stations. The network is designed to prioritize collaboration, add a local lens to the economic storytelling audiences rely on and amplify regional content for Marketplace shows. We are looking for an experienced collaborative multichannel leader who wants to build something new and help the public media ecosystem thrive.

Deeply embedded with the Marketplace newsroom, the Station Engagement Editor will serve as a bridge between stations and their reporting staff and Marketplace's national newsroom. Through regular editorial collaborations, shared reporting efforts and special content partnerships, this role will help bring local economic stories to national audiences while helping participating stations strengthen the regional reporting they provide to their communities.

This position will also partner with APM Distribution and other internal teams to identify regions and stations with limited capacity for local economic reporting, strengthen reporting resources where possible and support sustainable editorial collaborations. As we gain a deeper understanding of station needs, the Station Engagement Editor will also serve as a creative guide for new content that supports and draws on the network. Rooted in audio and the needs of our partner stations across the country, this work will create meaningful multi-platform programming, which is critical to establishing sustainable revenue for stations.

NOTE: This is a grant funded position for three years.

Expected Compensation Range: $135,000 - $145,000 per year. The exact salary rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

  • Collaborate with stations and Marketplace editors to identify coverage priorities, editorial streams and special projects that strengthen Marketplace's regional reporting footprint.
  • Develop, manage and edit joint programming projects with stations including regional business reports, multichannel content, and joint events that highlight local economic stories.
  • Plan, negotiate and assign coverage to ensure timely and relevant reports for Marketplace programs and joint projects.
  • Coordinate with digital and social teams to deliver compelling, multi-platform contentโ€”including digital adaptations of the reporting projects, regional campaigns.
  • Assign, edit, and shape multichannel elements that meet Marketplaceโ€™s high standards for originality, clarity and insight.
  • Provide editorial support, guidance and reporting resources to stations with limited dedicated business or economic coverage
  • Host regular editorial meetings with station content leaders to generate story ideas and shared projects and to ensure a consistent pipeline of high-quality station-originated content for Marketplace programs.
