Search & Comparison IntentFocus on protocol development, software skillsFocus on network setup, hardware, and infrastructure

While both roles involve networking expertise, Remote Protocol Engineers primarily develop and test network protocols and software, whereas Remote Network Engineers focus on designing and maintaining network infrastructure. Both require similar certifications and often work in tech or telecom industries, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Protocol Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Protocol Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, network protocols, and distributed systems, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in protocol design. Familiarity with programming languages such as Rust, Go, or C++, as well as tools like Wireshark, Git, and blockchain technologies, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective remote communication, and collaborative skills set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure the engineer can design, implement, and troubleshoot secure and efficient protocols in decentralized and remote work environments.

What is a Remote Protocol Engineer?

A Remote Protocol Engineer is a specialized software engineer who designs, develops, and maintains network communication protocols while working remotely. Their work ensures that different systems and devices can communicate effectively and securely over networks, such as the internet or internal company systems. They often collaborate with distributed teams, troubleshoot protocol-related issues, and may work on protocols for blockchain, IoT, or traditional networking. This role typically requires strong knowledge of networking concepts, programming languages, and security standards.

What are some common challenges Remote Protocol Engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Protocol Engineers often work with global, cross-functional teams, which can make real-time collaboration challenging due to differing time zones and communication styles. Additionally, ensuring clarity in technical specifications and achieving consensus on protocol changes can be more complex without in-person interactions. Successful engineers in this role usually develop strong written communication skills and leverage collaborative tools to bridge these gaps, fostering productive teamwork despite the remote setup.

Job description

About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.
A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.
Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team:
Join our Systems Test team, where we validate the safety and performance of Torc's autonomous driving system through hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) testing and simulation. Our team operates at the intersection of software, hardware, and autonomy, ensuring that complex system behaviors are thoroughly tested before deployment to vehicle platforms.
As a Senior Systems Test Engineer - HiL, you will play a key role in designing, building, and executing HiL-based validation strategies for autonomous driving software. You'll work closely with systems, perception, planning, and software teams to ensure seamless integration and high-quality system performance across the autonomy stack.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain HiL test benches to support validation of autonomous driving software and system-level functionality
  • Define and execute test strategies, test cases, and validation plans based on system requirements, safety goals, and integration needs
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks to improve test coverage, repeatability, and efficiency
  • Integrate hardware and software components into HiL environments, managing interfaces, data flows, and synchronization across subsystems
  • Conduct verification and validation (V&V) activities in alignment with safety standards such as ISO 26262
  • Support the integration and validation of new autonomy features across perception, sensor fusion, and vehicle control systems
  • Utilize tools and frameworks such as ROS/ROS2, CAN-based systems, and simulation platforms for testing and debugging
  • Analyze test results, investigate system-level issues, and collaborate cross-functionally to drive resolution
  • Document test procedures, results, and defects, and communicate findings to engineering and program stakeholders
  • Continuously improve HiL infrastructure, tooling, and workflows to support scalable and efficient testing

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 3+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Automotive Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) testing, including test bench setup, integration, and maintenance
  • Experience working with HiL platforms such as dSPACE, National Instruments (NI), Vector, or similar systems
  • Solid understanding of autonomous driving systems, including sensors (LiDAR, radar, cameras), perception, sensor fusion, and vehicle dynamics
  • Experience developing and executing test cases and validation plans for complex systems
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++, with experience building test automation and tooling
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2, including node development, system integration, and debugging tools (e.g., rviz, rosbag)
  • Familiarity with CAN protocols and tools such as CANoe, CANalyzer, or similar
  • Experience integrating complex systems across hardware and software boundaries
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug system-level issues in complex environments
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment

Bonus Points
  • Experience testing autonomous vehicles or ADAS systems in production or pre-production environments
  • Familiarity with simulation frameworks or model-based development tools
  • Experience supporting safety-critical system validation and regulatory requirements
  • Experience working in Agile or SAFe environments
  • Exposure to cloud-based data systems or large-scale test data analysis
