Remote Product Design involves creating comprehensive product solutions, including UI, UX, and product strategy, often working closely with cross-functional teams. Remote UX Design primarily focuses on user experience, research, and usability testing. While both roles require design skills and collaboration, Product Designers have a broader scope that includes product strategy, whereas UX Designers concentrate on optimizing user interactions.

How do remote product designers effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams?

Remote product designers typically use a combination of digital collaboration tools, such as Figma, Slack, and Zoom, to work closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and shared design systems help ensure everyone stays aligned on goals and project progress. Building strong communication habits and proactively seeking feedback are key to overcoming the challenges of distance and time zones in a remote setup. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of teamwork and helps remote designers contribute effectively to the product development process.

What is remote product design?

Remote product design is the process of creating and developing new products or improving existing ones while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. Designers collaborate virtually using digital tools to ideate, prototype, test, and iterate on product concepts. This approach allows teams to work together from different geographic locations, often improving flexibility and access to diverse talent. Remote product designers typically use communication platforms, cloud-based design software, and project management tools to facilitate their workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote product designer?

To thrive as a Remote Product Designer, you need expertise in UX/UI principles, a strong portfolio, and proficiency in design thinking and user research, typically supported by a degree in design or related field. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and collaboration platforms such as Miro or Slack is crucial. Exceptional communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you stand out in remote, cross-functional teams. These abilities enable the creation of user-centered products while maintaining efficient collaboration and productivity from a distance.

Job description

Staff Product Manager

This is a remote position.
Job ID #920
Position Type:
3-Month Temporary Assignment with the possibility of converting to a full-time employee based on business needs and performance.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Staff Product Manager, you will serve as the hands-on product leader responsible for guiding two related product teams. The primary focus of this role is leading a large, consumer-facing healthcare product used by Veterans to securely access and manage sensitive medical information. You will also provide strategic oversight for a secondary Tier 3 support product while partnering with an existing product lead responsible for its day-to-day operations.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex stakeholder environments, can confidently navigate ambiguity, and has experience leading legacy modernization initiatives within Agile Scrum delivery teams.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead product strategy, roadmap, and execution for a large healthcare-focused digital product supporting Veterans.
  • Provide product leadership and strategic oversight for a secondary Tier 3 support product while partnering with an existing product lead.
  • Serve as the primary product partner for government stakeholders, engineering teams, designers, and cross-functional delivery teams.
  • Drive legacy modernization efforts by helping transition users from legacy systems to modern digital experiences.
  • Translate business objectives and user needs into prioritized product backlogs and actionable delivery plans.
  • Partner with Scrum teams to deliver incremental value through an Agile development process.
  • Balance competing priorities while making informed product decisions with incomplete information.
  • Communicate product strategy, priorities, risks, and tradeoffs to technical teams, executives, and government stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across multiple organizations to remove blockers, align priorities, and successfully deliver product outcomes.
  • Champion user-centered product decisions while balancing mission needs, technical constraints, and business priorities.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree and 9+ years of relevant experience.
    • Relevant years of experience may be substituted for education.
  • 3+ years leading cross-functional Agile product teams.
  • Experience serving as the primary product manager for externally facing digital products.
  • Experience leading products using Agile Scrum methodologies.
  • Experience influencing cross-functional teams and stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Strong experience managing product roadmaps, prioritization, and stakeholder expectations in complex environments.

Clearance Requirements

  • An active Public Trust (Tier 2) security clearance is required on Day 1.
  • Candidates who currently hold an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance are also encouraged to apply and will be fast-tracked through the required Public Trust clearance process.
  • Must be able to maintain the required security clearance throughout employment.

Desired Skills

  • Experience leading consumer-facing healthcare or medical technology products, particularly products involving protected health information (PHI), medical records, patient portals, laboratory results, or clinical notifications.
  • Experience supporting federal government digital services programs.
  • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
  • Experience leading legacy modernization or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Experience supporting live production environments, including Tier 3 support, incident management, or operational product ownership.
