What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programmer, you need a strong background in industrial automation, control systems engineering, and proficiency in ladder logic programming, often supported by a degree in electrical or automation engineering. Familiarity with major PLC platforms (such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Schneider Electric) and programming software, along with relevant certifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable system operation, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration with on-site teams, which are critical for maintaining industrial processes remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by remote PLC Ladder Logic Programmers, and how can they be overcome?

Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programmers often face challenges such as limited access to on-site hardware for testing and troubleshooting, as well as communication gaps with on-site engineers or operators. To overcome these issues, it's important to establish clear channels for remote diagnostics, utilize simulation tools for code testing, and maintain regular virtual meetings with the on-site team. Building strong documentation practices and remote support protocols can also help ensure smooth project execution and minimize downtime.

What is Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programming?

Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programming refers to the process of designing, developing, and troubleshooting ladder logic programs for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) from a remote location. This allows engineers and technicians to update, monitor, or diagnose PLC-controlled systems without being physically present on-site. Remote programming is commonly used in industrial automation to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and support geographically dispersed operations. It requires reliable network connections and secure remote access tools to ensure safe and effective control of machinery and processes.

Job description

You've discovered something special. A company that cares. Cares about leading the way in construction, engineering, manufacturing and renewable energy. Cares about redefining how energy is designed, applied and consumed. Cares about thoughtfully growing to meet market demands. And - as "one of the Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America" - is focused on the mind/body/soul of team members through our Culture of Care
Faith Technologies Inc. (FTI) is searching for an Advanced Test Engineer to support power generation products for the Product team. This position can be remote or hybrid if you are near an FTI location, with travel involved.
This role is a high-impact, strategic position designed for a technical expert who can bridge the gap between customer requirements and operational excellence. As the Global Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will define the standards for how power generation systems are setup and validated across the organization.
The Advanced Global Test Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of testing processes for complex power generation and power distribution systems. This includes initial customer consultation, equipment specification, protocol development, and global site support. You will serve as the primary technical authority, ensuring that testing methodologies are standardized, automated where possible, and integrated seamlessly into the broader manufacturing and quality ecosystems.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in a core engineering discipline - Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or Energy Engineering.
  • Minimum: 5+ years of experience in Testing Engineering or relevant roles
  • Expertise in automated test software (e.g., LabVIEW, Python, or PLC-based testing).
  • Deep understanding of power electronics, grid simulators, and load banks.
  • Strong knowledge of communication protocols (Modbus, CANbus, Ethernet/IP).

Travel: Approximately 25% annually. Travel is project-based and may occur in concentrated periods, such as extended travel during installation, commissioning, or project phases, followed by periods with minimal travel. Most travel occurs during the workweek, with team members returning home on the weekends.
Work Schedule: This role can be hybrid or remote based on your location. This position works between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Ability to work a flexible schedule is necessary.
Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time other than the TN1 Visa (Canadian).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Consultation & System Specification
  • Collaborate directly with customers to interpret technical requirements and translate them into robust testing strategies.
  • Define, develop, and write technical specifications for advanced testing equipment tailored to power generation applications.
  • Lead the selection and procurement of high-precision instrumentation and hardware for global deployment.

Protocol & Script Development
  • Design and develop comprehensive test scripts and automated sequences to validate system performance and safety.
  • Author detailed test protocols (FAT/SAT) and validation plans that comply with international power industry standards.
  • Iterate on testing logic to improve cycle times while maintaining maximum fault-detection sensitivity.

Systems Integration & Data Analytics
  • Architect and implement system integrations between testing hardware and internal databases (MES, ERP, or PLM).
  • Develop automated test reporting requirements and dashboards to provide real-time visibility into quality metrics.
  • Ensure data integrity and traceability across all global testing platforms.

Global SME & Operational Support
  • Serve as the Global Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all testing-related queries and initiatives.
  • Provide Tier-3 technical support to local site teams to resolve complex or "unsolvable" testing failures.
  • Standardize testing processes across global sites to ensure consistency in product quality and data output.
  • Mentor and train site-level engineers on new equipment, protocols, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

The job description and responsibilities described are intended to provide guidelines for job expectations and the employee's ability to perform the position described.
