The Controller/CFO Consultant serves as a trusted advisor to entrepreneurial clients, delivering exceptional consulting, accounting, and tax services. This role combines technical expertise with strategic insight to help clients make informed financial decisions. Responsibilities include overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis, while ensuring compliance and operational efficiency. The Consultant may lead engagements or provide support to other CFO Consultants, depending on project scope.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review or prepare financial statements, schedules, and reports; journal entries; fixed asset schedules; payroll; and other general accounting functions for assigned clients.
  • Consult with clients on accounting, tax, and business matters, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, cash management, debt management, sales and use tax, and regulatory filings.
  • Review work prepared by staff, providing feedback to ensure accuracy and support professional development.
  • Research and document technical accounting and tax issues to support compliance and provide guidance to team members.
  • Coordinate preparation of complex and non-complex tax returns, including income, payroll, sales and use tax, and business license filings.
  • Oversee or assist with client invoicing, accounts payable processing, and ACH transactions as needed.
  • Analyze financial data, identify trends, and prepare reports to keep clients informed and support strategic decision-making.
  • Responsible for detailed daily tracking of hours by client and project.
  • Develop and maintain internal systems, processes, and quality controls to ensure compliance deadlines are met and reporting integrity is maintained.
  • Manage special projects such as budgeting, financial projections, profitability analysis, cash flow modeling, internal control reviews, and tax planning strategies.
  • On specific assigned clients, oversee, coordinate, and review the assigned client activities of other staff to ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and/ or financial schedules & reports, journal entries (daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annually), fixed asset schedules, payroll, and/or other general accounting/financial duties.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as identified or needed to help drive our Vision and abide by our client promise to help our clients grow.
  • Mentor and coach client accounting team members to foster growth and deliver exceptional client service.
  • Monitor and manage all client engagement deadlines, including monthly, quarterly, and annual closings; payroll cycles; tax filings; and special projects.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required; CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • At least 2+ years in a Controller role with direct supervisory experience; CPA firm experience is a plus.
  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including financial statement preparation, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and other cloud-based accounting platforms preferred.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting is a plus.
