Remote Performance Engineer information

How does a Remote Performance Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to address system bottlenecks?

Remote Performance Engineers frequently work alongside developers, QA analysts, and operations teams to identify and resolve system performance issues. Collaboration is often facilitated through virtual meetings, shared dashboards, and ticketing systems, allowing for real-time discussion of bottlenecks and potential solutions. Engineers may be responsible for presenting their findings, recommending optimizations, and guiding implementation while ensuring all stakeholders are aligned on priorities. Effective communication skills and proactive documentation are essential to succeed in this remote, collaborative environment.

What are Remote Performance Engineers?

Remote Performance Engineers are specialized IT professionals who work from remote locations to monitor, analyze, and optimize the performance of software applications, systems, or networks. Their main goal is to ensure that digital products run efficiently and can handle user demand without slowdowns or outages. They utilize various tools and methodologies to identify bottlenecks, conduct testing, and recommend or implement solutions to improve overall system performance. These engineers often collaborate with development, operations, and QA teams to maintain high standards of reliability and speed for end users.

Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health equity on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.

We are looking for an I O Engineer to join our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team supporting ORx and OFS (OptumRx and Optum Financial Services) applications. In this role, you will focus on driving high availability, performance, and reliability of our critical business applications that process pharmacy and financial transactions. You will leverage monitoring and logging solutions, design automation to eliminate manual work, and collaborate with engineering teams to resolve complex production incidents. This is a highly collaborative and technical role that ensures our systems remain resilient and scalable to serve millions of customers.

  • Evaluate emerging trends to inform solution design and strategic innovation
  • Perform routine and proactive monitoring of critical ORx/OFS applications to ensure system performance, reliability, and availability
  • Write and execute automation scripts and orchestration code to eliminate manual operational tasks (toil reduction) and streamline application deployment pipelines
  • Build and maintain monitoring dashboards, logging, and alerting systems using tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, and Grafana to track key system metrics and SLA compliance
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure and application-level issues, perform root cause analysis (RCA), and collaborate with engineering teams to implement permanent resolutions
  • Participate in on-call rotations to provide rapid-response technical support for critical production incidents, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations
  • Collaborate with database, cloud, and network administrators to optimize server and system performance
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise security, backup, disaster recovery, and infrastructure standards

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear directions on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience writing automation scripts using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, or PowerShell)
  • 2 years of experience with application performance monitoring (APM) and centralized logging tools (e.g., Dynatrace, Splunk, Datadog, or Grafana)
  • 2 years of experience supporting production web applications running on Linux/Unix and/or Windows servers
  • Must be willing and able to participate in an on-call rotation for 24/7/365 production support

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent technology experience)
  • Experience supporting pharmacy benefits management (PBM) or financial transaction systems (ORx or OFS platforms)
  • Experience with Cloud environments (such as Microsoft Azure or AWS) and container platforms (such as Kubernetes or Docker)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions) and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform or Ansible)
  • Good understanding of database management systems (relational or non-relational) and web/application servers (e.g., Tomcat, WebSphere, or IIS)
  • Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to manage incidents under pressure
