What are Remote Paper Mill Engineers?

Remote Paper Mill Engineers are professionals who oversee and optimize the operations of paper manufacturing plants while working from a location outside the physical mill. They use digital tools, data monitoring systems, and virtual communication platforms to manage production processes, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with on-site teams. Their responsibilities may include process optimization, equipment maintenance oversight, and ensuring safety and quality standards are met. This role combines traditional engineering skills with remote work technologies, allowing for efficient support and management of paper mill operations from afar.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Paper Mill Engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote Paper Mill Engineers often face challenges related to troubleshooting equipment and process issues without being physically present at the mill. Effective communication with on-site staff and a deep understanding of remote monitoring systems are essential. An important deliverable of this role, which will need to be kept evergreen, is the creation of the "Belden Products/Solutions Security Manual".

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop and maintain Belden's multi-year security strategy and strategic narrative aligned to company growth and target verticals.
  • Identify security market inflection points (OT/ICS cybersecurity, convergence, secure remote access, segmentation, visibility, managed services) and recommend strategic responses.
  • Establish executive-ready points of view, strategy decks, and internal alignment materials.
  • Partner with Product Management to translate strategy into portfolio priorities and roadmap themes.
  • Lead build/buy/partner assessments; support M&A and partnership diligence from a security market/technology standpoint.
  • Define strategic requirements for platform capabilities (identity, policy, telemetry, analytics, secure-by-design processes).
  • Engage strategic customers to understand risk drivers and buying criteria. Represent Belden as an OT security Subject Matter Exprt (SME).
  • Build relationships with key ecosystem players (technology partners, system integrators, cloud/edge platforms) and help shape joint-value propositions.
  • Support executive briefings, key pursuits, and escalations where security strategy is central.
  • Track and interpret relevant standards and regulatory drivers affecting customers (e.g., IEC 62443 concepts, NERC CIP security controls, EU CRA / NIS2 themes, sector-specific requirements where applicable).
  • Translate external requirements into internal guidance for product/solution direction and messaging.
  • Create repeatable frameworks for the Belden Security Strategy: segmentation models, reference architecture at the strategic level, maturity models, and positioning guidance.
Knowledge & Experience requiredEducation & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, cybersecurity, or related field (advanced degree preferred.)
  • 12+ years in cybersecurity strategy, product strategy, security architecture, or security leadership in networking/industrial/critical infrastructure contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence executive stakeholders and drive cross-functional strategic initiatives without direct authority.
  • Strong working knowledge of network security, identity/policy concepts, and security telemetry/monitoring; familiarity with IT/OT convergence challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills: can turn complex security topics into clear business decisions and narratives.
  • Strong networking fundamentals (switching/routing, VLANs, ACLs, NAT, VPNs, firewalls) and security fundamentals (identity, certificates, logging, vulnerability management).
  • Experience in creating technical / thought-leadership documentation such as white papers, keynotes, blog posts, videos, podcasts, etc. surrounding the OT security topic.
  • Ability to work across teams and influence outcomes without direct authority.
  • OT/ICS security experience (industrial networks, Purdue model, segmentation strategies, remote access patterns for plants, SIEM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with IEC 62443, NIST SP 800, and common compliance/customer audit expectations.
  • Experience with SIEM integrations (Syslog, Splunk, Sentinel, QRadar), NAC/identity, IDS use cases (Dragos, Claroty, Nozomi Networks, etc.) and zero trust concepts.
  • Experience supporting M&A / partner diligence, strategy consulting, or corporate strategy for security.
  • Certifications (nice to have): CISSP, CISM, GICSP, IEC 62443, or equivalent.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required to perform the duties of the role (30% frequency of travel)
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, Visio, SharePoint) plus proficiency with platforms for CRM (e.g. Salesforce), ticket management (e.g. Jira) and knowledge sharing (e.g. Confluence)
