***This position is Remote, with candidates required to reside Missouri***
Job Purpose: Works as a team and will be used to support investigations in searches and hazardous situations. The K-9 Handler position is first an intricate part of the investigations team. The K-9 Handler position is an assignment and works for and in these position at the request of the Departments of Corrections.
Essential Duties:
  • Work as a team with a trained K9 to detect specific substances or items.
  • Continue skills training of a Handler with supervision of K9 Supervisor.
  • Maintain and submit required K-9 Handler reports and evaluations.
  • Maintain the high level of canine training, to ensure that the K9 is kept at an acceptable level of readiness.
  • Maintain the health and safety of K9.
  • Must be on-call to accept whatever hours and days assigned by the Office.
  • Must maintain proper facilities and training area for the dog at personal residence.
  • Maintain any and all special equipment issued to him, including a motor vehicle.
  • Must stay informed on all new canine deployment and training techniques.
  • Must be aware of any legislation or laws affecting the canine concept and be able to give informative information to the administration on the impact of that law or legislation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic dog handling and training skills.
  • Non-Verbal Communication Skills.
  • Ability to observe the K9's behavior and understand signs.
  • Careful attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of proper groom techniques.
  • Ability to recognize common canine health issues.
  • Knowledge of canine anatomy and breed standards.
  • Must be able to perform efficiently, under stressful situations, within DOC facilities.
  • Ability to work under time constraints.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years' related experience and/or training.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Intelligence Studies, Criminal Justice or related field of study.

Physical Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and a variety of office equipment.
  • Occasionally may need to reach, stoop, or kneel.
