What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Offshore Mud Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Offshore Mud Engineer, you need a strong background in drilling fluid systems, chemistry, and geology, typically supported by a degree in engineering or related field and relevant offshore certifications. Proficiency with drilling fluid analysis tools, real-time monitoring software, and mud logging systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating with drilling teams and responding quickly to operational challenges. These competencies ensure safe, efficient drilling operations and help prevent costly downhole issues on remote offshore rigs.

What are Remote Offshore Mud Engineers?

Remote Offshore Mud Engineers are specialized professionals who manage drilling fluids, commonly known as 'mud,' on offshore oil and gas rigs. They monitor and adjust the properties of drilling mud to optimize drilling performance, maintain wellbore stability, and prevent blowouts. In a remote capacity, they use digital technologies and remote monitoring systems to support operations without being physically present on the rig, enhancing safety and efficiency. Their expertise is crucial in ensuring smooth drilling operations and minimizing environmental impact.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Offshore Mud Engineers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Offshore Mud Engineers often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing well conditions, limited access to immediate technical support, and the need to communicate clearly with onshore teams. Managing these challenges effectively requires strong problem-solving skills, a proactive approach to monitoring drilling parameters, and proficiency with real-time data monitoring systems. Building solid communication routines with both offshore crew and onshore support teams is key to ensuring smooth operations and quick resolution of issues.

Job description

Noom is on a mission to help people live better, longer. We're a consumer-led digital health company, connecting people to content, coaching, community, and clinicians, to build lasting habits and live healthier lives. We're a high-growth organization powered by science, technology, and world-class talent. When you join Noom, on any team, you'll see the impact of your work on the world.

Our Engineering Team

Our Engineering team builds the technology that powers Noom's mission, from consumer-facing health products to the B2B infrastructure that enables enterprise partnerships at scale. Within our B2B focus area, we move fast, build with purpose, and tackle complex backend challenges that directly shape how Noom serves health plans and employers.

About the Role

Our AI Team is looking for a Lead Backend Engineer. In this role, you'll own significant backend engineering scope, driving key agentic AI engineering initiatives across the business while providing hands-on technical leadership to a small team of engineers. This is an IC-first role: 80% engineering, 20% managing others.

You'll work closely with other engineering leaders in the org to define scope, optimize how we support the business, and lead GenAI projects that extend what we're already building. If you love staying hands-on and doing the engineering work and want to lead, this is the role for you.

You Will

  • Own and deliver backend engineering work across Noom's AI and Agentic initiatives
  • Partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders across our engineering, product, and healthcare teams to define, scope, and prioritize engineering work
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance and mentorship to offshore direct reports
  • Architect and implement scalable backend systems using Java and/or Kotlin that support Noom's enterprise client base
  • Help shape and continuously improve how the Engineering team operates

About You

If you're interested in solving complex technical challenges and lead with innovation as we shape the future of health, this role may be for you!

You Have

  • 8+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong command of Java, Kotlin, or other languages
  • Demonstrated experience as a lead-level IC and comfortable owning significant technical scope while guiding others
  • Strong ability to collaborate cross-functionally to define technical scope and deliver against business priorities
  • Experience with or interest in managing remote and/or offshore engineers across time zones
  • A pragmatic, adaptable mindset; you move fluidly between engineering and light people leadership without losing momentum

What Makes This Job Amazing

  • This is an engineering-first role; you'll spend 80% of your time doing the work you love, with real ownership over meaningful areas that powers Noom's business
  • You'll have a direct seat at the table. working closely with other stakeholders to shape scope and priorities, not just execute them
  • You'll join a mission-driven company making a real difference in people's health

What You'll Earn and Enjoy

  • Pay that reflects your impact. Compensation benchmarked to the market and shaped by your impact and value.
  • Investment in your future. A 401(k) with company match to help you build long-term financial security.
  • Time to truly recharge. Paid holidays, generous time off, Summer Fridays, and a company-wide Summer Break week so the whole team can unplug together.
  • Care that covers it all. Access to top-tier medical plans for you and your family, including a premium-free plan option, alongside dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Support for growing families. Paid parental leave to give you the time and flexibility to focus on what matters most.
  • And more to help you thrive. Stock awards, a performance-based bonus, and exclusive access to Noom's products, so you can grow with us, win with us, and enjoy what we build.

The base salary range for this position is $179,000 - $211,000. Actual compensation is determined by job-related factors, including experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role is based in our Princeton office with a hybrid schedule (2 days per week on-site).
