Remote Observability Engineer information

What are the typical collaboration patterns for a Remote Observability Engineer working with distributed teams?

Remote Observability Engineers frequently collaborate with software developers, DevOps teams, and IT operations to ensure systems are monitored effectively and issues are detected early. Working remotely, you'll often use communication tools like Slack, Jira, and video conferencing to coordinate incident response, discuss monitoring strategies, and review system health dashboards. Regular sync meetings and asynchronous updates are common, and you'll likely contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing to keep all stakeholders informed. Building strong communication habits is important, as much of the troubleshooting and improvement work hinges on clear coordination with multiple teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Observability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Observability Engineer, you need strong expertise in monitoring, logging, and tracing systems, along with a background in computer science or related technical fields. Familiarity with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Datadog, and cloud platforms is typically required, as well as relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a proactive mindset help you detect and resolve issues before they impact users. These competencies ensure system reliability, enable rapid incident response, and support seamless collaboration in distributed environments.

What is the difference between Remote Observability Engineer vs Site Reliability Engineer?

AspectRemote Observability EngineerSite Reliability Engineer
CredentialsKnowledge of monitoring tools, scripting, cloud platformsSame as Observability Engineer, plus SRE certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentFocus on monitoring, logging, and tracing systems remotelyBroader scope including system reliability, incident response, and automation
Industry UsagePrimarily in tech, SaaS, cloud servicesWidely in tech, finance, and large-scale online services

The Remote Observability Engineer specializes in monitoring and analyzing system performance remotely, focusing on tools like logs and metrics. In contrast, the Site Reliability Engineer has a broader role, ensuring overall system reliability, automation, and incident management. While both roles require similar technical skills, SREs often have additional responsibilities related to system resilience and scalability.

What is a Remote Observability Engineer?

A Remote Observability Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that monitor the health, performance, and reliability of software applications and infrastructure from a remote location. They use observability tools to collect and analyze logs, metrics, and traces, helping organizations quickly detect and resolve issues. Their work ensures that distributed systems are transparent, reliable, and efficient, often collaborating with development, operations, and security teams. Remote Observability Engineers often work from anywhere, leveraging cloud-based tools and platforms to manage complex IT environments.

Job Overview

WHO WE ARE Relativity is a leading legal data intelligence company building technology that helps users organize data, discover the truth, and act on it with confidence. Our AIpowered, cloud platform, RelativityOne, transforms massive volumes of complex information into actionable insights for litigation, investigations, regulatory inquiries, data breach responses, and other highstakes legal work where accuracy and trust are crucial. The world's largest law firms, corporations, and government agencies rely on Relativity's legal AI software to securely surface and manage the most relevant and impactful information in their matters. Beyond our commercial impact, we're deeply committed to expanding access to technology for academic institutions through Relativity Academic and supporting pro bono legal work through Justice for Change. WHAT WE DO At Relativity, engineers don't just write code. They build the foundational systems that industries rely on to uncover critical insights, ensure compliance, and operate securely at scale. Our platform combines cloudnative architectures, modern developer tooling, and AI capabilities to deliver trusted outcomes across highly regulated environments. User Authentication Team The User Authentication team builds and operates tier0 identity and authentication services that protect customer access to Relativity's platform. These services sit directly on the request path for every user interaction, requiring an exceptional focus on availability, security, and correctness. The team partners closely with product, security, and platform teams to deliver scalable authentication workflows, improve reliability and observability, and continuously raise the bar on operational excellence. If you're passionate about building securitycritical systems, designing for failure, and owning highly available services that operate at global scale, Relativity offers the opportunity to make a measurable impact.

Job Description and Requirements

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, develop, and operate authentication and identity services that are secure, highly available, and scalable
  • Build and maintain integrations with identity providers, including OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and SAMLbased systems
  • Own production reliability for critical services, including oncall rotations, incident response, and postincident learning
  • Implement defenseindepth security controls such as multifactor authentication (MFA), token lifecycle management, and leastprivilege access
  • Improve system observability through metrics, structured logging, dashboards, and alerting
  • Participate in code and design reviews with a strong emphasis on security, correctness, and failure modes
  • Collaborate crossfunctionally with product, security, and platform teams to deliver authentication features, improvements, and migrations
  • Contribute to longterm identity and authentication strategy across the platform

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as C#, Java, or Python
  • Experience designing and operating cloudbased services
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including availability, failure handling, and scalability

Preferred

  • Experience building or operating authentication, authorization, or other securitycritical systems
  • Working knowledge of OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and/or SAML
  • Experience operating tier0 or businesscritical services with high availability requirements
  • Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and CI/CD practices in production environments

WHY WE COULD BE A GREAT FIT

Impactful Mission

  • Your work helps protect customer access to systems used in highstakes legal and regulatory matters around the world.

  • Engineers on this team own services endtoend, from design through production operations, gaining deep experience in distributed systems and security.

Engineering Culture

  • Strong focus on operational excellence, observability, postincident learning, and raising the quality bar through thoughtful reviews.

This position is eligible for total compensation which includes a competitive base salary, an annual performance bonus, and long-term incentives.

The expected salary range for this role is between following values:
