Job description

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Backend Engineer, Node.js + AWS in Netherlands.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced backend engineer to contribute to the development of scalable, high-performance software solutions within a globally distributed and fast-growing technology environment. In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to build reliable backend systems, optimize APIs, and support products used by businesses and professionals worldwide. The position combines technical ownership, architectural thinking, and hands-on engineering within a remote-first culture that values autonomy, innovation, and collaboration. You will work on complex technical challenges involving scalability, performance, and cloud-native infrastructure while helping shape the future of modern global workforce technology. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving impactful problems, working asynchronously with international teams, and delivering customer-centric solutions at scale.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using Node.js, TypeScript, and modern cloud technologies.
  • Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, designers, and QA teams throughout the full software development lifecycle.
  • Build and optimize high-performance systems capable of handling large transaction volumes, concurrency, and rapid scalability requirements.
  • Develop secure, reliable, and maintainable API architectures, including authentication, validation, and queue-based processing systems.
  • Optimize PostgreSQL databases through advanced query tuning, schema design, migrations, and performance improvements.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and continuously improve system reliability, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Troubleshoot, identify, and resolve production issues while maintaining high engineering standards and development speed.
  • Participate in product discovery, technical planning, and deployment processes to ensure business-focused and customer-centric delivery.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, code reviews, and knowledge sharing within distributed engineering teams.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a Software Engineer with strong backend development expertise.
  • Advanced proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript/JavaScript, along with experience in at least one additional server-side programming language.
  • Strong expertise in PostgreSQL, including database modeling, query optimization, and data migration strategies.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles, software architecture, and design patterns.
  • Experience designing scalable distributed systems and optimizing applications for high traffic and performance under load.
  • Hands-on experience building secure APIs, implementing authentication mechanisms, and working with asynchronous or queue-based architectures.
  • Familiarity with AWS cloud services and serverless architectures is highly valued.
  • Previous experience working on SaaS platforms or always-on production systems is considered a strong advantage.
  • Knowledge of FinTech environments or highly regulated systems is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in remote-first and globally distributed teams with strong ownership and collaboration skills.
  • Business-oriented mindset with a passion for solving customer problems through technology.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote work environment with flexibility to work from supported locations across Europe and EMEA.
  • Competitive compensation package with potential stock grant opportunities based on role and location.
  • Access to additional country-specific perks and employee benefits.
  • Optional coworking access through WeWork locations.
  • Opportunity to work in a fast-growing international technology environment with strong career growth potential.
  • Exposure to large-scale distributed systems, modern cloud infrastructure, and cutting-edge engineering practices.
  • Collaborative and inclusive company culture focused on innovation, diversity, and continuous learning.
  • Opportunity to contribute to products impacting millions of users and global businesses worldwide.
