What is a remote mediator?

A Remote Mediator facilitates conflict resolution between parties through virtual communication methods such as video calls, phone, or email. They help negotiate agreements in legal disputes, workplace conflicts, family matters, or business disagreements. Remote Mediators use negotiation techniques, active listening, and neutrality to guide discussions and help parties reach a fair resolution. This role requires strong communication skills, impartiality, and problem-solving abilities. Many mediators work independently or for legal, corporate, or nonprofit organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mediator?

To thrive as a Remote Mediator, you need strong conflict resolution skills, a thorough understanding of mediation processes, and typically a background in law, counseling, or dispute resolution with relevant certifications. Proficiency with video conferencing platforms, case management software, and secure document sharing systems is essential. Outstanding listening abilities, neutrality, emotional intelligence, and clear written and verbal communication help you stand out in this role. These competencies ensure effective, impartial facilitation of virtual negotiations and foster positive outcomes for all parties involved.

What are some common challenges faced by remote mediators when facilitating virtual sessions?

Remote Mediators often encounter challenges such as managing technical issues, ensuring confidentiality in remote settings, and building rapport without face-to-face interaction. Maintaining participant engagement and reading nonverbal cues over video or phone calls can also be more demanding compared to in-person mediation. Successful Remote Mediators develop strategies to foster trust, set clear ground rules, and utilize digital tools to facilitate open communication. Being prepared for these hurdles and addressing them proactively is key to maintaining a productive and fair mediation process.

Job description

Description
Family Law Attorney - Colorado (Remote)
New Leaf Family | Full-Time | $125,000-$150,000 DOE + Production Bonuses
Practice law differently.
New Leaf Family isn't a "divorce broker." Since 2004, we've built a Family Law practice around empowerment and clarity instead of conflict - helping clients move toward the future they want, not just survive the present. We're looking for an experienced Colorado attorney who wants the same.
Who we are
Since 2004, New Leaf Family has been rethinking what a Family Law firm can be. The clients we serve come to us with personal conflicts that intersect with legal issues - not purely legal problems - so we help them clarify their goals and move confidently toward the future they want, drawing on a network of coaches, counselors, and financial planners along the way.
We're not in the business of fueling conflict. We're fully prepared to litigate when it's the right call, but our first commitment is always to resolutions that support a healthier future for the whole family. It's a values-first culture built on integrity, compassion, and excellence - and it shows in how our attorneys practice and how clients heal.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
You'll guide clients through major life transitions with strategy and compassion: listening deeply, explaining options clearly, advocating skillfully in negotiation, mediation, and court, and connecting clients to coaches, counselors, and financial planners when their needs go beyond the legal. You'll do it as part of a collaborative, distributed team - leading when it counts and leaning on support when it helps.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For:
• 3+ years practicing Colorado Family Law
• Licensed and in good standing with the Colorado Bar
• A sharp, empathetic communicator who writes exceptional legal work
• Creative and solution-oriented - comfortable working beyond traditional legal playbooks
• Tech-proficient and genuinely collaborative, even remotely
