How much do remote mechanical design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote mechanical design engineer in Oregon is $96,824.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,400.00 and $108,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a remote mechanical design engineer effectively collaborate with on-site teams and manage project communication?

As a Remote Mechanical Design Engineer, effective communication is crucial for ensuring project success. Most teams use collaborative platforms like CAD cloud storage, project management tools, and regular video meetings to bridge the distance. You'll need to proactively update stakeholders, share design files in compatible formats, and clarify requirements or feedback. Building strong relationships with on-site engineers and participating in virtual design reviews are key to staying aligned with team objectives and project timelines.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectRemote Mechanical Design EngineerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field; CAD certificationsHigh school diploma or associate degree; CAD training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, remote work possible, collaborative teamsDrafting rooms, CAD labs, remote work less common
Industry UsageProduct design, engineering firms, manufacturingDrafting and documentation, manufacturing support
Search/Comparison IntentDesign, engineering, product developmentDrafting, technical documentation

The Remote Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and developing mechanical products using CAD software, requiring engineering credentials and design expertise. In contrast, a Mechanical Drafter primarily prepares technical drawings and documentation, often with less formal education. While both roles utilize CAD tools and may work remotely, the engineer's role involves more design innovation and engineering analysis, whereas the drafter supports manufacturing and production documentation.

What does a remote mechanical design engineer do?

A Remote Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems and products, but works from a location outside of the traditional office. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed models and drawings, collaborate with team members through digital communication tools, and ensure that designs meet project specifications and industry standards. Their work often involves problem-solving, researching new materials or technologies, and making improvements to existing products or systems. Effective communication and self-management are crucial since they work remotely. This role is common in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and consumer products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, 3D CAD modeling, and product design, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA, along with familiarity with PLM systems, is essential, and certification in these tools is advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation distinguish top performers in a remote work setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering innovative, accurate designs and collaborating efficiently with distributed teams.

Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support satellite mechanical subsystem and payload development programs. This role is responsible for structural architecture layout, primary and secondary structure design, analysis, assembly, and test support, including detailed design definition of parts and assemblies, management of mechanical interfaces between subsystems, and the analysis reports, interface control drawings, and manufacturing documentation that accompany them. The ideal candidate is innovative, hands-on, and thrives in fast-paced, cross-functional technical environments, capable of leading a small team while also executing assignments autonomously.ย

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform mechanical design and computer-aided modeling of space hardware, including final detailed design definition of parts and assemblies and management of mechanical interfaces between subsystems.
  • Conduct structural, mechanical system, and satellite payload equipment layout studies to determine optimal system architecture in terms of simplicity, performance, mass, and cost.
  • Develop and maintain mechanical and structural design documentation at system and equipment level: mechanical analysis reports, interface control drawings, tooling and fixturing, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Support creation of developmental and qualification test procedures (vibration, shock, TVAC, assembly).
  • Prepare and present the information required to conduct thorough design and readiness reviews with management and peers.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing and production to ensure successful transfer of information and that efficient processes are understood and documented.
  • Evaluate and champion new technologies and methods.ย

Qualificationsย

Education:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field; an advanced degree is preferred.

Experience:

A minimum of 12 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, integration, and testing of spacecraft and spacecraft components.ย

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong technical skill in design of satellite assemblies for launch and on-orbit environments, as well as design for manufacturability.
  • Experience using standard analytical tools and classical structural analysis methods to support sizing and trade studies.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, launch vehicle integration.
  • Experience operating in a Windchill PLM environment.
  • Advanced degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.ย

Soft Skills:

  • Innovative and creative approach to problem solving, with a willingness to challenge the status quo.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team with other engineers.
  • Ability to lead a small team while also carrying assignments autonomously.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.ย

Technology Stack:

  • CAD: Siemens NX preferred; CATIA, SolidWorks, or CREO also considered.
  • PLM / product data management: Windchill.
  • Standard analytical tools and classical structural analysis methods for sizing and trade studies.ย

Physical Requirementsย

  • Ability to work in a standard office environment and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Willingness to travel 25%-50% of the time.

This job description may not be inclusive to the duties and responsibilities listed. Additional tasks may be assigned to the employee from time to time or the scope of the job may change as needed by business demands.ย
