What is a Remote MDS Nurse?

A Remote MDS Nurse is a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) who assesses and compiles patient data for the Minimum Data Set (MDS) from a remote location. They ensure accurate documentation for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, care planning, and compliance with federal regulations. This role typically involves reviewing patient records, coordinating with healthcare teams, and submitting reports electronically. Remote MDS Nurses must have experience in long-term care and MDS 3.0, along with strong analytical and communication skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Remote MDS Nurse?

To thrive as a Remote MDS Nurse, you need a valid RN license, in-depth knowledge of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) process, and strong clinical assessment skills. Familiarity with MDS software (like PointClickCare), electronic health records (EHR), and CMS guidelines is typically required, along with RAC-CT certification being highly desirable. You’ll frequently collaborate with on-site nursing staff, interdisciplinary care teams, and sometimes residents’ families to gather and clarify information. Much of your work will be done independently using secure online platforms, but regular virtual meetings or check-ins with colleagues are common. Successful candidates are self-disciplined, communicative, and comfortable with a technology-driven workflow. This role offers the flexibility of working from home while staying deeply involved in the care planning process.
