What is a remote managed service provider?

A Remote Managed Service Provider (MSP) is a company or team that remotely manages a business's IT infrastructure and end-user systems. MSPs handle tasks like network monitoring, cybersecurity, data backup, and technical support, all from an offsite location. This allows businesses to focus on their core operations while experienced professionals maintain and secure their technology. Remote MSPs typically offer their services on a subscription basis, providing proactive support and minimizing downtime.

What is the difference between Remote Managed Service Provider vs Network Administrator?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote managed service provider, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Managed Service Provider, you need strong IT troubleshooting skills, a solid understanding of network and system administration, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE). Familiarity with remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools, ticketing systems, and cybersecurity solutions is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills help professionals coordinate with clients and resolve issues efficiently. These abilities are critical for delivering reliable support, maintaining system uptime, and ensuring client satisfaction in a remote environment.

How does a remote managed service provider typically collaborate with client IT teams to ensure seamless service delivery?

Remote Managed Service Providers (MSPs) work closely with client IT teams through regular communication, ticketing systems, and scheduled virtual meetings to align on goals, resolve issues, and implement new technologies. They often use remote monitoring and management tools to proactively detect and address problems, minimizing downtime for clients. Successful collaboration involves clear documentation, shared protocols, and frequent updates, ensuring both the MSP and client teams are informed and responsive. Building trust and maintaining transparency are key to fostering strong partnerships and achieving seamless service delivery.

Job description

FusionTek is a leading Managed Service Provider with offices in Kirkland, WA, Federal Way, WA, Washington, DC, and Tampa, FL. Since 2007, we've been delivering high-quality IT infrastructure management and support to small- and mid-sized businesses across the country.
As our organization continues to grow, we're excited to add an experienced IT Project Manager to our team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working closely with clients, and has a strong understanding of IT services and project delivery. You'll play a key role in driving successful outcomes, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring projects are executed with excellence.
At FusionTek, our culture is built around four core values that guide everything we do:
  • Teamwork: We collaborate to achieve outstanding results.
  • Growth Mindset: We invest in continuous improvement for our team, our clients, and our company.
  • Integrity: We operate with honesty, transparency, and a client-first approach.
  • Ownership: We take responsibility for our commitments and deliver on them.

As our IT Project Manager, you will lead and manage IT projects from kickoff through completion-ensuring they stay on schedule, within scope, and on budget. You'll serve as a key point of contact for clients, drive internal alignment, and help shape the success of our service delivery.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Developing and managing project plans, timelines, and budgets
  • Lead, oversee, and manage project engineers on the project team - act as a people manager, providing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback
  • Own department success - understand profitability metrics, resource allocation, and how projects impact overall MSP growth
  • Act as the primary liaison for clients regarding project-related communications, providing timely updates and addressing issues throughout the project life cycle.
  • Oversee technical resources to guarantee that tasks are carried out in accordance with the project plan.
  • Ensure project documentation is precise, encompassing project plans, schedules, budgets, change orders, and closure documents.
  • Take the initiative to recognize, monitor, and address potential risks.
  • Oversee modifications to the project scope by implementing a formal change control process to prevent scope creep and guarantee alignment with business objectives.
  • Managing project development from inception to completion, ensuring projects meet intended outcomes and client satisfaction.
  • Facilitating meetings and regular updates with stakeholders to communicate project status and address any issues or roadblocks.
  • Coordinating cross-functional teams, ensuring collaboration and clear communication among staff, clients, and vendors.
  • Evaluate and offer feedback on project hour estimates that are non-technical
  • Performing evaluations after project completion to promote ongoing improvement and communicate insights gained with the team.

Requirements
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Project Management, Business Administration, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of project management experience within a Managed Service Provider (MSP) environment (required).
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with clients, vendors, and internal technical teams in a fast-paced service environment.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple IT projects simultaneously, coordinating cross-functional teams to successful outcomes.
  • PMP certification preferred (or other relevant project management credentials)
Technical Skills
  • Strong understanding of IT principles, infrastructure, and managed services, with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to clients.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Teams, SharePoint).
  • Hands-on experience with PSA and project management tools such as ConnectWise Manage, Autotask, Asana, or Microsoft Project.
  • Familiarity with IT Service Management (ITSM) frameworks and best practices.
Other Skills & Abilities
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, with a client-focused approach.
  • Proactive problem-solver with the ability to identify risks early and implement effective mitigation strategies.
  • Detail-oriented and committed to accuracy and follow-through.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
