What is a Remote Software Engineer Student?

A Remote Software Engineer Student is someone who is currently studying software engineering and participates in learning or internship opportunities from a remote location, rather than in-person. These students often take online courses, complete virtual internships, or contribute to remote team projects to gain practical experience in software development. Working remotely allows them to build technical and collaboration skills using digital tools, while balancing academic commitments. This role helps prepare students for future careers in software engineering by providing real-world experience in a flexible setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Software Engineer Student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Engineer Student, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and basic computer science, often supported by coursework or self-directed learning. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, code collaboration platforms such as GitHub, and integrated development environments (IDEs) is typically required. Strong self-motivation, effective time management, and clear communication skills are essential for succeeding in a remote learning and collaborative environment. These abilities allow you to learn efficiently, contribute to projects, and navigate the unique challenges of remote work and study.

What are some common challenges faced by remote software engineer students, and how can they be overcome?

Remote software engineer students may encounter challenges such as staying motivated without in-person supervision, managing distractions at home, and effectively communicating with mentors or team members online. To overcome these obstacles, it's helpful to establish a dedicated workspace, set a structured daily routine, and utilize collaboration tools like Slack or Zoom for regular check-ins. Proactively reaching out for feedback and participating in virtual study groups can also boost engagement and learning.

DocuSign

Seattle, WA • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Medical, Life, Retirement, PTO

Job description

Company Overview

Docusign brings agreements to life. Over 1.5 million customers and more than a billion people in over 180 countries use Docusign solutions to accelerate the process of doing business and simplify people's lives. With intelligent agreement management, Docusign unleashes business-critical data that is trapped inside of documents. Until now, these were disconnected from business systems of record, costing businesses time, money, and opportunity. Using Docusign's Intelligent Agreement Management platform, companies can create, commit, and manage agreements with solutions created by the #1 company in e-signature and contract lifecycle management (CLM).

What you'll do

As a P3 Software Engineer in the B2B - Business To Business engineering organization, you will own end-to-end delivery of critical infrastructure to power Docusign's agreement management workflows for business customers. You will design, build, test, deploy, and operate scalable, highly available backend services and APIs that are core to our B2B products, partnering closely with product, architecture, and peer engineering teams across the organization. You are comfortable working in a modern cloud environment (Azure and/or AWS), with a focus on performance, reliability, observability, and security. You collaborate well in cross-functional settings and help raise the engineering bar through code quality, testing, and knowledge sharing.

This position is an individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Manager, Software Engineering.

Responsibility

  • Own feature delivery across the full software development lifecycle: design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support for backend services and APIs used by B2B products and platforms

  • Design and implement services and APIs using C# or TypeScript/Node.js, following best practices for modularity, testability, and maintainability

  • Build cloud-native, microservices-based systems, leveraging Azure services, containers, and modern deployment practices to achieve high availability, resilience, and scalability

  • Contribute to shared platform capabilities (e.g., libraries, config pipelines, telemetry and observability tooling) that are reused across multiple B2B services, helping other teams adopt and extend them

  • Improve quality and reliability by authoring and maintaining automated tests (unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end where appropriate), defining test plans for your features, and participating in on-call rotations with strong root cause analysis and incident response

  • Instrument services with telemetry (metrics, logs, traces) and use data to drive performance tuning, capacity planning, and error-budget-based decisions for the systems you own

  • Partner with product management, architecture, SRE, and peer application teams to refine requirements, align designs, and unblock cross-team initiatives, especially where platform capabilities or shared infrastructure are involved

  • Contribute to code reviews and engineering best practices, providing constructive, specific feedback and helping to evolve team standards around coding, testing, and deployment

  • Mentor more junior engineers informally by sharing context, reviewing designs, and providing guidance on debugging, testing, and operational excellence consistent with P3 expectations

Job Designation

Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required. (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation)

Positions at Docusign are assigned a job designation of either In Office, Hybrid or Remote and are specific to the role/job. Preferred job designations are not guaranteed when changing positions within Docusign. Docusign reserves the right to change a position's job designation depending on business needs and as permitted by local law.

What you bring

Basic

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building production services or applications using OO languages such as C#, Java, or TypeScript/Node.js

  • 2+ years designing, building, and operating cloud-native microservices or APIs at scale (REST or gRPC), including version control, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing as part of your daily workflow

  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL data stores and data modeling for production services

  • Demonstrated ability to own features end-to-end, including design docs, implementation, testing strategy, rollout, and operational support

Preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft stack (C#, .NET, ASP.NET) in large-scale SaaS environments.

  • Hands-on experience with Azure (e.g., AKS, App Services, Cosmos DB, Azure SQL) or comparable services in AWS

  • Prior work on shared platform components (libraries, pipelines, common services) adopted by multiple teams

  • Familiarity with observability and telemetry stacks used for monitoring and incident response (e.g., metrics, logging, dashboards, alerting, big data/stream processing for telemetry)

  • Experience participating in or leading RCAs and on-call activities for high-severity incidents, with a focus on prevention and long-term reliability improvements

  • Experience working in an agile environment and delivering software iteratively with frequent, high-quality releases

  • Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, distributed systems, and troubleshooting in a production environment

  • Clear, concise communication skills and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional and cross-team settings
