What is a remote manufacturing controller?

A Remote Manufacturing Controller is a finance professional who oversees and manages the financial operations of manufacturing processes from a remote location. Their responsibilities typically include budgeting, financial analysis, cost control, and reporting for manufacturing sites, ensuring financial efficiency and compliance. By leveraging digital tools and cloud-based systems, they collaborate with on-site teams to monitor performance and provide strategic insights. This role is crucial for companies that operate multiple manufacturing sites or have adopted remote work policies. Remote Manufacturing Controllers help drive profitability and streamline operations while working offsite.

What is the difference between Remote Manufacturing Controller vs Remote Production Planner?

AspectRemote Manufacturing ControllerRemote Production Planner
CredentialsTypically requires manufacturing, finance, or accounting certificationsUsually holds supply chain or production planning certifications
Work EnvironmentOversees manufacturing operations, often in factories or remote management rolesFocuses on scheduling and resource allocation, often in office or remote settings
Industry UsageCommonly employed in manufacturing companies to control costs and production efficiencyUsed in manufacturing and supply chain sectors to plan production timelines

The Remote Manufacturing Controller and Remote Production Planner roles share overlapping skills in manufacturing processes and industry knowledge. However, the controller primarily manages financial and operational oversight, while the planner focuses on scheduling and resource management. Both roles are vital for efficient production but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How does a remote manufacturing controller effectively collaborate with on-site production teams?

A Remote Manufacturing Controller maintains strong communication with on-site production teams through regular video conferences, shared dashboards, and digital reporting tools. They often participate in virtual meetings to review production metrics, discuss cost-saving initiatives, and address any discrepancies in financial data. Building trust and alignment with on-site managers is crucial, so proactive communication and clear documentation are key. Despite working remotely, controllers can stay closely connected by leveraging real-time data platforms and fostering open lines of communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote manufacturing controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Manufacturing Controller, you need a strong background in accounting, financial analysis, and manufacturing processes, typically supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or business administration. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and relevant certifications such as CMA or CPA are highly valued. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills are crucial for collaborating with onsite teams and managing complex data remotely. These abilities ensure accurate financial oversight, effective decision-making, and seamless coordination across distributed manufacturing operations.

The ideal candidate will have strong Creo experience, expertise in GD&T (ASME Y14.5), and hands-on experience with configuration management and engineering change processes.

Responsibilities

• Develop and release CN-controlled designs, models, and drawings for umbilical assemblies, retraction/release mechanisms, routing hardware, launch pad structures, test fixtures, and transportation tooling.

• Define and document interfaces between vehicles, payloads, launch systems, test equipment, and ground support equipment, including mechanical, fluid, and electrical interfaces.

• Develop, modify, and maintain Creo models, assemblies, and drawings in compliance with engineering modeling standards and configuration management requirements.

• Perform model checks, design reviews, and CN release activities to ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards and design requirements.

• Generate detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 (GD&T) standards.

• Support the design and development of ground support equipment, test fixtures, lifting fixtures, transport frames, handling tooling, and related mechanical systems.

• Define tooling and system operational requirements, including rigging points, load paths, handling procedures, and interface definitions.

• Maintain product data and configuration control through CN-controlled engineering release processes.

• Collaborate with stress analysts, design engineers, and cross-functional teams to incorporate analysis-driven design changes.

• Ensure all released documentation supports manufacturing, assembly, inspection, testing, and operational requirements.

• Participate in design reviews, engineering change processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

• Proficiency in Creo (Pro/ENGINEER), including complex models, assemblies, and engineering drawings.

• Experience developing and managing large assemblies and detailed CAD models.

• Strong knowledge of GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards.

• Experience producing manufacturing and assembly drawings for aerospace or similar high-precision industries.

• Experience working within configuration management and engineering change (CN) release processes.

• Experience with Windchill or similar product lifecycle/configuration management tools.

• Ability to take designs from model creation through formal engineering release.

• Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a controlled engineering environment.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with umbilical systems, launch infrastructure, or ground support equipment.

• Experience with test fixtures, handling tooling, and transportation hardware design.
