Job description

Senior EHR Systems Administrator

at Zócalo Health

Remote (Full Time)

Compensation: $140,000

About Us

Zócalo Health is a tech-enabled, community-oriented primary care organization serving people who have historically been underserved by the one-size-fits-all healthcare system. We partner with health plans, providers, and community organizations to deliver culturally competent primary care, behavioral health, and social care.

Our model is built for populations with high medical and social complexity, where fragmented care drives poor outcomes and unnecessary cost. We combine local, community-based teams with virtual care and modern technology to deliver coordinated, whole-person care where members live and receive support.

Founded in 2021, Zócalo Health is backed by leading healthcare and mission-aligned investors and is scaling rapidly across states and populations. We are building a durable care platform designed to perform in constrained healthcare environments and to lead the shift toward accountable, value-based care.

Role Description

The Senior EHR Systems Administrator (athenahealth) is the system owner and architectural authority for Zócalo Health's athenahealth environment. This role is responsible for ensuring the EHR operates as a safe, stable, scalable, and audit-defensible foundation for clinical care, billing, reporting, and operational workflows.

This role owns the governance model, configuration architecture, and long-term structural integrity of athenahealth. The Senior EHR Systems Administrator defines how the system is used, ensures changes are safe and scalable, and prevents system degradation or architectural drift as the organization grows.

This is not a ticket execution or IT support role. This role is accountable for the reliability, compliance, and long-term health of a mission-critical system that underpins clinical operations, revenue integrity, and audit readiness.

This role operates as a cross-functional leader and trusted authority across Clinical Operations, Billing, Compliance, Product, Engineering, and Data.

This position reports to the VP of Product.

The Senior EHR Systems Administrator will contribute in the following ways:

  • System Ownership and Architecture
    • Own athenahealth as a core operating system and system of record

    • Define scalable configuration patterns, workflows, templates, and access models

    • Ensure the EHR remains stable, compliant, and audit-ready as the organization grows

    • Lead root cause analysis and structural remediation when system issues occur

  • Governance and Change Management
    • Serve as the final authority on configuration changes affecting clinical workflows, billing, reporting, and integrations
    • Establish and enforce governance processes for configuration, access, and releases
    • Approve, reject, or redesign proposed system changes to protect long-term system integrity
    • Ensure system changes are documented, traceable, and compliant
  • System Design and Scalability
    • Ensure athenahealth safely supports new programs, markets, and care models
    • Partner with Product and Engineering to align EHR usage with broader platform architecture
    • Maintain reliable data flows between athenahealth and downstream analytics and operational systems
    • Identify structural improvements that increase system reliability and efficiency
  • Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Serve as the primary EHR authority for Clinical Operations, Billing, Compliance, Product, and Data teams
    • Advise leaders on system capabilities, risks, and constraints
    • Ensure workflows support accurate documentation, billing, and reporting
    • Partner with Compliance to maintain audit readiness and regulatory alignment
  • Operational Excellence and Team Development
    • Establish standards for documentation, workflows, and configuration management
    • Maintain clear internal documentation supporting operational consistency
    • Mentor and guide junior EHR administrators and associates
    • Ensure operational execution aligns with governance and architectural standards
    • Perform other responsibilities and tasks as requested by your manager. Zócalo Health is a rapidly scaling startup, and with that comes the expectation to occasionally perform additional tasks to help move the business forward.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience administering Athenahealth or a comparable enterprise EHR platform in a clinical delivery environment
  • Deep expertise in EHR configuration, workflows, templates, user roles and permissions, and operational governance
  • Experience designing scalable system structures and governance processes for healthcare operations
  • Strong understanding of downstream impacts including billing workflows, reporting integrity, and compliance requirements
  • Ability to serve as a technical authority and make independent decisions affecting system architecture and operational risk
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally with clinical operations, product, engineering, finance, and compliance teams
  • Strong systems thinking with a focus on long-term stability and structural integrity
  • High ownership mindset with accountability for system outcomes, not just task execution

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting value-based care models, Medicaid populations, or high-complexity care delivery organizations
  • Familiarity with EHR integrations, analytics pipelines, and healthcare data infrastructure (e.g., Snowflake or similar platforms)
  • Experience working in scaling healthcare startups or high-growth care delivery organizations
  • Background in compliance-heavy environments requiring strong documentation and audit defensibility
  • Experience evaluating AI-enabled clinical or documentation tools within EHR workflows

What you can expect from Zócalo Health

  • Equity compensation package
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision
  • 401k
  • Flexible PTO policy - take the time you need to recharge
  • $1,000 home office stipend
  • We provide the equipment needed for this role.
  • Opportunity for rapid career progression with plenty of room for personal growth.
