Remote Level Designer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Level Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Level Designer, you need a deep understanding of game design principles, spatial reasoning, and proficiency with level editing tools, often supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with engines like Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote work and creative iteration with distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to create engaging, functional game environments and to ensure smooth teamwork despite physical distance.

How do Remote Level Designers typically collaborate with other team members given the virtual work environment?

Remote Level Designers frequently work with artists, programmers, and game designers through a combination of virtual meetings, project management tools, and shared digital assets. Effective communication is key, and teams often rely on platforms like Slack, Zoom, and version control systems such as Perforce or Git to coordinate updates and feedback. Regular check-ins and collaborative playtesting sessions help ensure alignment on design goals and maintain productivity despite the distance. Adapting to different time zones and being proactive about sharing progress are common challenges, but most studios provide structured workflows to support remote teamwork.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Product Designer based in Netherlands.

This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career Product Designer to contribute to a mature technical product while developing their craft alongside experienced design professionals. In this role, you will create intuitive, high-quality experiences for complex developer-focused workflows, balancing user needs with business and technical requirements. You'll work closely with Product, Engineering, and senior designers to deliver meaningful product improvements and refine existing experiences. This position offers the opportunity to strengthen your design skills, gain deeper technical knowledge, and contribute to products used by modern software teams worldwide. It is ideal for a detail-oriented designer who enjoys iterative work, collaboration, and solving challenging UX problems in a remote-first environment.

Accountabilities
  • Own well-defined product design initiatives within a mature product area, including improvements, iterations, edge cases, usability enhancements, and interface consistency.
  • Translate product requirements and user needs into clear, production-ready designs with strong interaction design, information architecture, and visual design principles.
  • Collaborate with senior designers through design reviews, feedback sessions, and mentorship opportunities to continuously improve design quality and craft.
  • Support user research activities by contributing to interviews, usability testing, and the synthesis of user insights into actionable design improvements.
  • Apply and extend existing design system patterns to create consistent, scalable, and efficient user experiences.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers and Engineers throughout implementation, communicating design decisions clearly and helping resolve product edge cases.
  • Create design assets supporting product launches, onboarding experiences, release communications, and feature announcements.
  • Develop technical understanding of developer workflows, infrastructure concepts, and user challenges to design more effective solutions.
  • Incorporate AI-powered tools into daily design workflows for ideation, exploration, automation, and productivity improvements.
Requirements
  • 2-5 years of professional Product Design experience, ideally working on B2B, technical, SaaS, or developer-focused products.
  • Strong foundations in interaction design, information architecture, visual design, and user-centered design principles.
  • Proficiency in Figma and familiarity with modern design systems and component-based design practices.
  • Portfolio or concrete work samples demonstrating shipped product experiences, design processes, interaction decisions, and visual craftsmanship.
  • Ability to manage iterative design work reliably, maintain attention to detail, and deliver consistent quality across multiple product areas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain design decisions clearly and effectively.
  • Openness to feedback, collaboration, and guidance from senior design professionals.
  • Curiosity about technical users, developer workflows, and complex software products.
  • Comfortable using AI tools within the design process and interested in exploring their potential.
  • Fluent English communication skills (B2+ level) and based in Europe.
  • Experience with DevOps tools, infrastructure products, observability, CI/CD workflows, design tokens, HTML/CSS, code-based prototyping, or artifact-driven product practices would be considered an advantage.
Benefits
  • Fully remote position with flexibility to work from Germany.
  • Opportunity to work on a technically advanced product shaping the future of infrastructure management.
  • Collaborative environment with experienced product and design professionals.
  • Strong opportunities for professional growth and progression toward a Senior Product Designer role.
  • Flexible work environment supporting work-life balance.
  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Opportunity to contribute to impactful products used by modern engineering teams worldwide.
  • Remote-first culture built around ownership, collaboration, respect, and continuous learning.
