Remote Level Designer information

What is a remote level designer?

A Remote Level Designer is a professional who creates and structures the environments, stages, or levels within a video game while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include designing layouts, establishing gameplay flow, and collaborating with other game development team members online. Remote Level Designers use various software tools to build interactive and engaging experiences for players, ensuring that levels are both fun and challenging. Effective communication and time management are essential skills for succeeding in this remote role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote level designer?

To thrive as a Remote Level Designer, you need a deep understanding of game design principles, spatial reasoning, and proficiency with level editing tools, often supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with engines like Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote work and creative iteration with distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to create engaging, functional game environments and to ensure smooth teamwork despite physical distance.

How do remote level designers typically collaborate with other team members given the virtual work environment?

Remote Level Designers frequently work with artists, programmers, and game designers through a combination of virtual meetings, project management tools, and shared digital assets. Effective communication is key, and teams often rely on platforms like Slack, Zoom, and version control systems such as Perforce or Git to coordinate updates and feedback. Regular check-ins and collaborative playtesting sessions help ensure alignment on design goals and maintain productivity despite the distance. Adapting to different time zones and being proactive about sharing progress are common challenges, but most studios provide structured workflows to support remote teamwork.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Level Designer based in Netherlands.

This is an opportunity to shape engaging, readable, and strategically rich spaces for a major action-focused game project.
You will own level design from early concepts through blockout and refinement, ensuring spaces support combat, movement, and core gameplay systems.
Your work will directly influence how players explore, make decisions, fight, navigate, and experience the game world.
You will collaborate closely with designers, engineers, AI specialists, and environment artists to turn creative concepts into compelling playable experiences.
Rapid iteration, playtesting, and data-driven feedback will be central to refining your work and improving player experiences.
You will also contribute to the growth of the design team by sharing knowledge, providing constructive feedback, and mentoring less experienced designers.
The role offers substantial creative autonomy within a fully remote, collaborative studio culture that values player experience, honesty, and continuous improvement.

Accountabilities
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to plan, design, and develop engaging level content aligned with the game's core mechanics and creative direction.
  • Design and construct maps, arenas, objectives, combat spaces, and other gameplay environments from initial concepts through final blockout.
  • Create clear blockouts that effectively communicate player flow, scale, positioning, sightlines, cover opportunities, traversal routes, and gameplay intent.
  • Present and pitch level design concepts and ideas to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Rapidly iterate on levels based on playtest results, player behavior, design objectives, and feedback from the wider development team.
  • Participate in playtests of your own and other designers' work, providing thoughtful and actionable feedback.
  • Collaborate with Mechanics Designers, AI Designers, and Engineers to develop unique gameplay mechanics and improve level design tools and workflows.
  • Work closely with Environment Artists to transition gameplay blockouts into polished environments while protecting the intended gameplay experience and spatial integrity.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve level design processes, tools, and player experiences throughout development.
  • Mentor and support junior members of the level design team, sharing knowledge, techniques, and constructive feedback.
  • Contribute to a collaborative culture of experimentation, iteration, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in Level Design, ideally with experience on shipped or playable commercial games.
  • Strong passion and knowledge of action games on PC and/or console.
  • Demonstrated expertise in game design, spatial design, and 3D level construction.
  • Professional experience with industry-standard game engines such as Unreal Engine 5 and/or Unity.
  • Portfolio demonstrating high-quality Level Design work, preferably including shipped or publicly playable projects.
  • Strong understanding of player behavior, spatial readability, combat design, movement, navigation, and gameplay flow.
  • Ability to intelligently discuss the strengths and weaknesses of modern games and articulate the design techniques that contribute to engaging levels and systems.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to understand direction, present ideas clearly, incorporate feedback, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multiple disciplines in a remote environment.
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to mentor more junior designers.
  • Drawing, art, or Photoshop skills are a plus.
  • Experience with scripting languages and technical level design workflows is advantageous.
  • Ability to create 3D geometry beyond basic blockout quality is a plus.
  • A proactive, imaginative, and player-focused approach to game development.
Benefits
  • Fully remote working environment with support for team members across many regions.
  • Generous paid time off allowance.
  • Dedicated summer and winter studio closures in addition to regular PTO.
  • Private medical and dental healthcare.
  • Private mental health support scheme.
  • Generous annual health and wellbeing allowance.
  • Discretionary studio bonus.
  • High-end technology and equipment for your home working setup.
  • Additional region-specific benefits.
  • Significant creative autonomy and flexibility in how you approach your work.
  • Supportive culture focused on honesty, collaboration, continuous improvement, and a healthy relationship with work.
  • Opportunity to contribute to an ambitious, high-profile game project alongside experienced and passionate developers.
