Remote Level Designer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Level Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Level Designer, you need a deep understanding of game design principles, spatial reasoning, and proficiency with level editing tools, often supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with engines like Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote work and creative iteration with distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to create engaging, functional game environments and to ensure smooth teamwork despite physical distance.

Will AI replace level designers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace level designers, as their role involves creative problem-solving, artistic judgment, and understanding player experience that AI cannot replicate. Instead, AI tools are increasingly used to assist level designers by automating repetitive tasks and generating ideas, allowing designers to focus on more complex aspects of level creation. Success in this field often requires skills in game engines, scripting, and a strong understanding of game design principles.

How do Remote Level Designers typically collaborate with other team members given the virtual work environment?

Remote Level Designers frequently work with artists, programmers, and game designers through a combination of virtual meetings, project management tools, and shared digital assets. Effective communication is key, and teams often rely on platforms like Slack, Zoom, and version control systems such as Perforce or Git to coordinate updates and feedback. Regular check-ins and collaborative playtesting sessions help ensure alignment on design goals and maintain productivity despite the distance. Adapting to different time zones and being proactive about sharing progress are common challenges, but most studios provide structured workflows to support remote teamwork.

How to make $100,000 a year working from home?

A remote level designer can earn $100,000 annually by gaining extensive experience, building a strong portfolio, and working for high-paying companies or freelance clients. Developing skills in industry-standard tools like Unreal Engine or Unity and networking within the gaming industry can also increase earning potential.

What is the difference between Remote Level Designer vs Remote Environment Artist?

Both roles often collaborate remotely within game studios and require related skills, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What is a Remote Level Designer?

A Remote Level Designer is a professional who creates and structures the environments, stages, or levels within a video game while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include designing layouts, establishing gameplay flow, and collaborating with other game development team members online. Remote Level Designers use various software tools to build interactive and engaging experiences for players, ensuring that levels are both fun and challenging. Effective communication and time management are essential skills for succeeding in this remote role.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

Remote Level Designers typically do not reach $300,000 annually, as this salary level is more common in executive, specialized medical, or high-level corporate roles. However, senior roles in tech, finance, or executive management can exceed this figure, especially with experience, certifications, and leadership responsibilities. High-paying jobs often require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes a combination of multiple roles or consulting work.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A remote level designer can potentially earn $10,000 or more per month by creating and refining game environments, often working freelance or for companies that value experience and portfolio over formal education. Success in this role depends on skills in game engines, 3D modeling, and level design, with some professionals reaching high earnings through independent projects or high-profile contracts.

Job description

Help us change lives

At Exact Sciences, we’re helping change how the world prevents, detects and guides treatment for cancer. We give patients and clinicians the clarity needed to make confident decisions when they matter most. Join our team to find a purpose-driven career, an inclusive culture, and robust benefits to support your life while you’re working to help others.

Position Overview

This position may be site-based or remote in Chicago, Boston, San Diego or Minneapolis.

Exact Science’s Customer Experience (CX) team is responsible for defining, driving, and delivering innovative, immersive, memorable customer-centric journeys for all our customers, across all channels. These journeys are grouped by Customer Types (e.g., Patient, Provider) and further categorized into a set of Experiences (e.g., Understand Risks & Complete Screening, Confirm Diagnosis). Each Experience has a set of specific, measurable Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) that the overall team is accountable to fulfill.

As a Lead Designer, Marketing Communications, you will help shape, define, and drive high-impact design initiatives across digital, product, and marketing platforms. You will blend systems thinking with hands-on execution, bringing structure to complex problems and elevating the craft of design through thoughtful, scalable, human-centered solutions. You’ll lead by example, guiding teams toward clarity, consistency, and innovation.

You will guide experience vision, interaction patterns, and system-level design across journeys and touchpoints, helping to unify design efforts across web, mobile, physical, and hybrid platforms. Your design work is grounded in deep empathy, curiosity, and a strong understanding of user mindsets, behaviors, and expectations. You design with people at the center, delivering solutions that reduce friction, build trust, and empower patients and providers to make confident, informed decisions.

You excel at balancing the strategic and the tactical, able to see the big picture of experience ecosystems while refining the details of interaction design, flows, and component-level polish. You bring structure to ambiguity, elevate the role of design in cross-functional work, and advocate for excellence at every level of execution. Your approach is rooted in systems thinking, iterative testing, and collaborative problem-solving, always with an eye toward both business outcomes and human impact.

As a hands-on, proactive, collaborative design leader, you’ll work closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Researchers, Content Strategists, and Legal, Marketing, and Medical partners. You’ll help teams navigate complexity, compliance, and competing priorities, driving forward experience strategies that are scalable, accessible, and compliant. You’ll shape the end-to-end design process and help teams deliver solutions that balance innovation with feasibility.

As a craft leader and mentor, you’ll model design excellence and help build a culture of feedback, continuous learning, and shared ownership. You’ll support junior and mid-level designers in growing their skills and craft while contributing directly to high-impact work. You know how to guide vision, define process, manage stakeholders, and roll up your sleeves to contribute at every level, ensuring quality delivery.

You have a strong track record of delivering thoughtful, inclusive, and high-quality digital experiences in complex environments. You’re able to balance priorities and understand the impact of key decisions. Your leadership empowers cross-functional teams to execute design that’s not only effective but deeply human.

You should be prepared to share a portfolio that demonstrates your ability to simplify complexity, bring strategy to life through experience, and create work that resonates with diverse audiences. Your work reflects a deep commitment to solving the right problems, driving meaningful outcomes at scale, and facilitating thoughtful interactions.
