What is remote legal research?

Remote legal research jobs allow you to work from home to research statues, legislations, and existing case law. In your role as a legal researcher, you may collect information, leverage public resources to find things that may impact a case, identify applicable laws and rules, and summarize your findings for a law firm or legal department. Remote legal researchers also speak with clients, update relevant parties on their findings, respond to discovery requests, coordinate with head lawyers, and apply the principles of logical deduction to information to uncover the truth. Many remote legal research jobs focus on specific types of cases, as they all require a different approach. Remote legal researchers rarely appear in court.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote legal researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Legal Researcher, you need strong analytical skills, in-depth legal knowledge, and typically a law degree or paralegal certification. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in document management software, are essential technical competencies. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for effective remote work. These abilities ensure accurate, timely legal analysis and support for clients or legal teams in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote legal research roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote legal research professionals often face challenges such as limited direct access to colleagues for immediate feedback, managing time zones when working with distributed teams, and ensuring secure access to sensitive legal databases. To address these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use collaborative tools for sharing research, and stay updated on data security protocols. Regular check-ins with supervisors and participating in virtual legal research forums can also help maintain high-quality work and professional growth.

Job description

Downs Law is a boutique commercial real estate firm that focuses on providing the highest quality legal services to our clients. Our primary practice areas are business litigation, commercial real estate and landlord/tenant matters, commercial collections, construction, and HOA disputes. We take pride in being personal, trustworthy, thoughtful, and creative.

We are seeking an experienced attorney to assist with our caseload on a contract/remote basis. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of complex civil litigation experience. The position would primarily support our partner attorney through drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, and preparing for depositions/trial. The position is fully remote, with the option to work in the office if desired, to ensure maximum flexibility and balance. Compensation will be based on experienced and hours billed.

We are not the average law firm, doing things the way they have always been done. We question old standards and make sure we check in with what works best for our clients and team. We are invested in finding the best of the best - those who are passionate at what they do and want to be on this mission with us! We expect greatness and are willing to help you get there. We want every person on our team to thrive - professionally AND personally and as a boutique firm, we offer a level of work- life harmony not possible in Big Law. We work consistently and diligently, rather than depend on deadlines and procrastination to move us along.
