What Are Remote IT Jobs?

Remote IT jobs involve performing duties related to information technology from a remote location. These tech careers typically take two forms. First, remote IT workers may travel to a client’s site to provide face-to-face customer service or offer computer troubleshooting or repair help. Second, remote working may also mean performing IT tasks for a company over the internet instead of in the company’s offices. Remote IT professionals may have the same responsibilities for providing software support, database solutions, and other information technology services as IT workers who work in offices full-time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote IT professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote IT professional, you need a solid background in computer systems, networking, troubleshooting, and often a degree in IT or related certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft Certified Professional. Familiarity with remote desktop tools, ticketing systems, VPNs, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is typically required. Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills are vital for collaborating effectively and supporting users remotely. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure reliable technical support and maintain seamless IT operations in distributed work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote IT professionals, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote IT professionals often encounter challenges like communication barriers, time zone differences, and difficulty accessing on-site hardware. To manage these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, use remote monitoring and management tools, and schedule regular check-ins. Building strong documentation practices and staying proactive with cybersecurity measures also help ensure smooth operations and collaboration.

  • Advise and guide Navy customers on best practices for maintaining afloat networks and associated components supporting data, voice, and communication services.
  • Participate in technical meetings, prepare progress updates, and deliver briefs and presentations as needed.
  • Support engineering and design reviews through participation in integrated product teams.

  • Must have an Active Secret Clearance to Start.
  • Must be able to obtain a TS/SCI after start.
  • Administration experience with Cisco switches/routers, Windows Server, or Linux.
  • Working knowledge of core networking concepts and protocols.
  • Current DoD IAT Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+).
  • Ability to obtain an approved Operating System certification (e.g., CCNA, Microsoft Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, Linux+, VCP, or equivalent) within 6 months of hire.

DESIRED SKILLS:
  • Experience designing, deploying, and maintaining enterprise-scale networks (LAN/WAN/MAN/datacenter).
  • Proficiency with enterprise wireless technologies (802.11 standards, controller-based systems, RF design, tuning, and modern security such as WPA3/802.1X).
  • Knowledge of high-availability architectures including HSRP/VRRP, redundant WAN edges, load balancing, and resilient datacenter fabrics.
  • Hands-on experience with next-generation firewalls, segmentation approaches, and zero-trust architectures across large networks.
  • Experience supporting hybrid infrastructures integrating on-prem networks with Azure, AWS, or GovCloud and secure identity integration.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, including performing root-cause analysis and developing corrective actions that minimize operational impact.
  • Ability to collaborate with customers, partners, and engineering teams to resolve high-severity issues and represent the team in cross-functional forums.
  • 2+ years of experience with IT ticketing systems such as HEAT, TrackIT, Magic, Remedy, Peregrine, or HELIX.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Office and Windows OS in enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with afloat Navy systems including CANES, ADNS, CENTRIXS, ISNS/ORT, ONE-NET, SCI-Networks, SUB-LAN, VIXS, WRBS, CND, and SCIP-IWF.
