Job description

At Endress+Hauser, progress happens by working together. As the global leader in measurement instrumentation, our ~18,000 employees shape the future in the field of process automation. Whether developing and realizing new technology as a team, collaborating to build instrumentation, or strengthening vital relationships with countless global industries, we work to create trusted relationships that help everyone thrive. As a family-owned company, we look beyond short-term moves and work to create a vision that is forward-thinking for our people, our clients, and the world at large.
Rust Automation & Controls started in 1976 and while we've grown significantly since our humble beginnings, we are still family owned and operated. We represent best-in-class industrial control manufacturers including Endress+Hauser across more than two million square miles of the Western US. Most of our customers have worked with us for decades and count on our experience and partners to keep their facilities safe, efficient, and productive.
Together, Endress+Hauser and Rust Automation & Controls work as trusted partners-combining global innovation and instrumentation expertise with strong local presence and service to deliver reliable automation solutions to customers across a wide range of industries.
What is the role about?
Rust Automation & Controls is hiring a small cohort of Outside Sales Engineers. During the first 12 weeks, this position will split time between Salt Lake City with the leadership team and the assigned home territory, where the ideal candidate will ride along with experienced sales professionals, learn the products, and begin setting appointments. This is a full-time role.
This position serves as a trusted resource for plant engineers selecting flow meters, valves, and other critical components for systems built to perform reliably for decades. The role represents long-standing manufacturing partners and builds customer relationships that position the Outside Sales Engineer as a first call for support and solutions.
The technical side-loops, valves, control theory, and related concepts-can be learned through time in the field. The ideal candidate brings the harder-to-teach qualities: drive to pursue new business, ability to build strong relationships, and a positive, service-focused mindset. Natural curiosity, strong communication skills, and a preference for engaging directly with customers are more important than a specific major or resume background.
Which tasks will you perform?
  • Learn and maintain working knowledge of all products and solutions offered by Rust Automation & Controls
  • Prospect and promote products, services, and solutions within assigned commercial, industrial, and municipal accounts
  • Grow territory sales and gross margin by increasing penetration in existing accounts and establishing relationships with new customers
  • Analyze specifications, application requirements, and related documents to prepare quotations in collaboration with the Inside Sales team
  • Conduct joint sales calls with management and manufacturing partners to strengthen customer relationships and maximize opportunities
  • Perform site walkdowns in industrial and commercial environments to assess needs and recommend tailored solutions
  • Maintain a robust CRM database, including accounts, contacts, opportunities, and projects
  • Clearly articulate customer solutions and collaborate with internal teams to ensure effective execution

What do we expect from you?
You will have (required):
  • Technical degree or 2-3 years of industrial sales experience (or related field)
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally within the assigned territory up to 90% of the time, including occasional overnight travel
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment; candidates based in or near Irvine, CA are highly preferred

You may have (preferred):
  • Self-motivated with the ability to set ambitious goals and achieve them
  • Strong desire to learn, grow, and be coachable
  • Resilient, adaptable, and solution-oriented with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-first mindset
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently while leveraging internal resources
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM/ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Salesforce)

What can you expect from us?
Rust Automation offers health and 401(k) benefits, including a company match, and a clear career pathway through our organization.
The anticipated pay range for this position is between $85,000 - 90,000 USD
