How much do remote industrial control systems jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote industrial control systems in the United States is $108,776.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,000.00 and $126,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How can I make $100,000 a year working from home?

Remote Industrial Control Systems professionals can earn $100,000 or more annually by gaining specialized certifications, such as CISSP or ISA certifications, and developing expertise in cybersecurity, automation, and SCADA systems. Building experience in high-demand areas, working for large organizations, or consulting can also increase earning potential while working remotely.

What are Remote Industrial Control Systems?

Remote Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are systems used to monitor and control industrial processes from a distance, often using networked technologies. These systems can manage operations such as manufacturing, energy distribution, water treatment, and more, allowing operators to supervise and adjust processes without being physically present. Remote ICS typically involve components like sensors, controllers (such as PLCs), communication networks, and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). Their remote capabilities help improve efficiency, safety, and real-time response to issues in complex industrial environments.

What is the difference between Remote Industrial Control Systems vs Remote SCADA Engineers?

AspectRemote Industrial Control SystemsRemote SCADA Engineers
CredentialsCertifications in industrial automation, networking, cybersecurityCertifications in SCADA systems, industrial networking, cybersecurity
Work EnvironmentIndustrial facilities, control rooms, remote monitoring centersControl centers, remote sites, industrial environments
Industry UsageManufacturing, energy, water treatment, oil & gasPower generation, water management, manufacturing
Job FocusManaging and securing industrial control systemsDesigning, implementing, and maintaining SCADA systems

Remote Industrial Control Systems professionals focus on managing and securing industrial control environments, while Remote SCADA Engineers specialize in designing and maintaining SCADA systems used for monitoring and control. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping industries, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are some common challenges faced when working remotely with Industrial Control Systems (ICS)?

Remote work in Industrial Control Systems often involves navigating secure network access, maintaining real-time communication with on-site teams, and troubleshooting issues without physical presence. Ensuring cybersecurity is a top priority, as remote access can present additional vulnerabilities. Additionally, remote ICS professionals must be adept at using specialized monitoring tools and collaborating closely with engineers and operators to ensure system reliability and safety. Strong problem-solving skills and clear communication are essential for success in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Industrial Control Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Industrial Control Systems Engineer, you need expertise in control theory, automation, networking, and a relevant engineering degree or certifications such as ISA/IEC 62443. Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLC programming, industrial network protocols, and cybersecurity tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential for troubleshooting and collaborating with remote teams. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and resilient operation of critical industrial infrastructure from remote locations.

Job description

The Control Systems Engineer quotes, designs, programs, and supports innovative industrial control systems, from initial concept through commissioning. This role works closely with engineers, fabricators, and field service teams to ensure reliable, high-performance automation solutions that meet customer requirements, safety standards, and performance expectations. Youโ€™ll bring together your knowledge of controls hardware, PLC/HMI programming, and process integration to deliver systems that help our customers operate smarter, safer, and more efficiently.

  • Design and develop industrial control systems, including hardware selection, schematic design, and programming.
  • Develop PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications using industry-standard platforms.
  • Prepare system specifications, I/O lists, and documentation packages.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams for seamless system integration.
  • Provide technical support for control panel fabrication, wiring, and testing.
  • Conduct on-site or remote system commissioning, testing, and operator training.
  • Assist with project management tasks โ€” scope definition, quoting, scheduling, and budget tracking.
  • Support sales and estimating teams with control system concepts and scope development.
  • Troubleshoot system and instrumentation issues to ensure reliable operation.
  • Contribute to standardization and continuous improvement of Cogentโ€™s design and engineering practices.

Work Environment/Travel Expectations
This position offers a mix of office and field-based work to support diverse project needs. Typical allocation includes approximately 40% on-site (customer or field locations), 60% in-office, and up to 20% overnight travel for commissioning, training, or project support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering or a Technical Degree with equivalent experience.
  • Experience in industrial control system design, programming, and integration.
  • Working knowledge of PLC and HMI platforms (Allen-Bradley preferred).
  • Strong understanding of control circuits, instrumentation, and VFD integration.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical for schematic design.
  • Excellent communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to travel as project needs require.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SCADA and historian systems.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A control panel standards and electrical safety codes.
  • Experience in water/wastewater or process automation industries.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with shifting priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
