What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Independent Music Label Professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Independent Music Label Professional, you need a solid understanding of music industry operations, digital distribution, and basic business management, often supported by experience or relevant education in music business. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs), music distribution platforms (like DistroKid or TuneCore), and social media marketing tools is commonly required. Strong networking, communication, and self-motivation skills help you build artist relationships and manage projects independently. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively promoting artists, expanding the label's reach, and adapting to the fast-evolving music landscape.

What are some typical challenges faced when managing a remote independent music label, and how can they be overcome?

Running a remote independent music label often involves challenges like coordinating with artists and team members across different time zones, maintaining effective communication, and managing digital workflows for music releases. These challenges can be addressed by using project management tools, scheduling regular virtual meetings, and establishing clear guidelines for collaboration and file sharing. Building strong relationships with artists and a reliable digital infrastructure is crucial for smooth operations and timely releases.

What is a remote independent music label?

A remote independent music label is a music company that operates without a central physical office, allowing its staff and artists to work from anywhere. These labels are independently owned and managed, not affiliated with major record companies, and they typically focus on supporting and promoting emerging or niche artists. Remote independent labels leverage digital tools for collaboration, distribution, and promotion, making it easier to reach global audiences and work with talent worldwide. Their flexible structure often allows for more creative freedom and personalized support for artists.

Job description

Who We Are

UnitedMasters is building a marketplace that connects artists, brands and fans - empowering artists to earn and grow. UnitedMasters has taken the bold step of building a music distribution service that, radically, puts artists first - disrupting the legacy music business by letting up-and-coming artists distribute their music directly to fans through streaming services while maintaining ownership of their master recording rights and up to 100% of royalties. Through the combination of UnitedMasters' music distribution platform and its deep ties to brands, UnitedMasters enables independent artists and change-makers to grow and earn unlike any other platform.

The UnitedMasters team is made up of musicians, marketers, engineers, and storytellers with backgrounds from YouTube, SoundCloud, Pandora, Facebook, Uber, Dropbox, Complex, VICE, and more. We work hand in hand with the award-winning creative teams that forge those innovative partnerships at Translation (our in-house creative advertising agency).

This role is based in SanFrancisco with four days in-office and one day remote.

What You'll Do

UnitedMasters is looking for a Staff Product Manager to operate as a force multiplier across the organization: setting product strategy for entire problem spaces, driving outsized business results, and raising the bar for how the entire product team builds. You will obsess over the functional and emotional needs of music creators and independent music labels at every stage of their growth, while pioneering how AI reshapes both what we build for artists and how we build it.

As a Staff PM, you are expected to lead through influence rather than authority, tackle our most ambiguous and highest-leverage problems, and mentor other PMs in the craft. You will partner closely with engineering, design, marketing, sales, and operations teams to improve and expand the full UnitedMasters product suite including tools for early-stage artists, high-traction artists, and independent record labels:

  • Own product strategy for a major area of the business. Define and champion a multi-quarter, unified product vision and roadmap that supports all of our artists: early-stage artists, artists gaining traction, and independent labels and ensure they have the tools they need to release music, grow an audience, and earn money. Connect that strategy directly to company-level objectives.
  • Pioneer AI-powered artist experiences. Identify, prototype, and ship AI-driven features that create step-change value for creators and labels from intelligent release and audience-growth tooling to earnings insights and creative assistance. Develop a strong point of view on where AI meaningfully improves the artist experience versus where it adds noise, and set the standard for responsible, high-quality AI product development across the company.
  • Raise the bar on team velocity with AI. Champion the adoption of AI tools to accelerate how the product org works using rapid prototyping, AI-assisted research synthesis, reusable AI skills and workflows, and internal agents to compress the path from idea to validated concept to shipped feature. Model these practices for other PMs and help operationalize them across teams.
  • Synthesize signal across all segments. Continuously collect and synthesize artist feedback through research, interviews, product analytics, and our artist-facing teams leveraging AI to accelerate and deepen that synthesis. Translate these insights into clear product requirements and roadmap priorities that increase adoption, satisfaction, and long-term retention.
  • Own the competitive and technology landscape. Stay deeply informed about the competitive landscape and the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem, understanding how other platforms work and identifying opportunities for UnitedMasters to stand out and deliver more value to creators and labels.
  • Master the end-to-end artist experience. Develop a deep understanding of the full artist journey, from onboarding and releasing new music to reviewing performance and earnings ensuring every step is intuitive, reliable, and delightful.
  • Drive cross-functional execution. Collaborate with teams who work directly with artists and labels every day to ensure our tools, features, and support deliver maximum value and help artists succeed.
  • Set the quality bar. Uphold and elevate a high bar of quality across the team, ensuring that everything we launch will delight artists, be easy to use, and attract and retain independent artists and labels.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proven ability to translate big, ambiguous, company-defining problems with many stakeholders into clear strategies and executable plans.
  • You connect features directly to desired outcomes and key results to ensure we build the highest-impact work that ladders up to company-wide goals.
  • You prioritize ruthlessly and know how to make tradeoffs between speed, scale, and cost.
  • You break down large problems into smaller iterative milestones with clear success criteria that gate future phases of work, ensuring we don't make over-sized investments relative to the value they deliver.
  • You are fluent with AI tools and demonstrate strong judgment about when and how to apply them both to ship artist-facing features and to drive your own and your team's productivity.
  • You have hands-on experience building prototypes and proofs-of-concept with AI tooling, allowing you to validate ideas quickly and de-risk investments before committing engineering resources.
  • Expertise in translating artist and stakeholder needs into clear, concise product requirements, and managing workflow (ideally using JIRA/Confluence).
  • You operate as a multiplier, mentoring other PMs, setting standards, and lifting the quality of work around you.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in product management, launching high-impact features from start to finish.
  • At least 3 years operating at a senior/lead level on a top-tier product team, ideally with a user base of independent creators or small business owners.
  • Demonstrated track record of setting product strategy for a significant area and driving measurable business outcomes.
  • Hands-on proficiency with AI tools you actively use them to prototype, accelerate research and decision-making, and build artist-facing capabilities.
  • Artist obsession with a strong bias for action.
  • Use quantitative and qualitative data to derive actionable insights.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience shipping AI/ML-powered features to production, with a clear understanding of their value, limitations, and responsible use.
  • Experience establishing AI-assisted workflows, reusable skills, or internal tooling that improved how a product team operates.
  • Confident using workflow management tools; experience with JIRA/Confluence preferred.
  • Comfortable digging into data, with hands-on experience using tools like Amplitude, Sigma, Mode, Tableau, etc.
  • You are a great team player who loves music and tech.
  • You are results-oriented, yet possess deep appreciation and sensitivity towards people, culture, and values.
  • You are persistent, but at the same time diplomatic and politically aware.
  • You are personable, smart, passionate, and optimistic, with a deeply pro-active, hands-on mentality.
  • You are excited about exploring entirely new business lines and opportunities, bringing your artist-first mentality wherever you go.
  • You hold yourself accountable and take great pride in your work, just like us.
  • Music Industry experience is preferred but not required.
Compensation

Salary Hiring Range: $195,000- $230,000

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of many compensation, benefits, and other reward opportunities we provide (e.g. in some cases bonus, stock options, 401(k) match, etc.).

Individual pay rate decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. We expect the majority of the candidates who are offered roles at our company to fall healthily throughout the range based on these factors.

The range above is for the expectations as laid out in the job description; however, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. If that ends up being the case, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate.

The salary range above is for NY/CA. As a company, we have a location-based strategy, which means the salary range could be lower or higher than this if the role is hired in another location.
