What are Remote HVAC BIM Modelers?

Remote HVAC BIM Modelers are professionals who use Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to design, coordinate, and document heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for buildings. They work remotely, collaborating with architects, engineers, and contractors through digital platforms to create accurate 3D models and detailed schematics. Their role is essential in ensuring that HVAC systems are efficiently integrated into building designs, helping to identify potential issues before construction begins and streamlining project workflows. Remote HVAC BIM Modelers must be proficient in BIM tools such as Revit and have a solid understanding of HVAC design principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote HVAC BIM Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote HVAC BIM Modeler, you need expertise in HVAC systems design, strong spatial awareness, and proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings, often supported by a degree or certification in mechanical engineering or drafting. Mastery of Building Information Modeling (BIM) software like Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD MEP, and familiarity with cloud collaboration tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective virtual communication skills help professionals excel in a remote and collaborative environment. These competencies ensure accurate modeling, seamless coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and successful project delivery in the digital construction landscape.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote HVAC BIM Modelers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote HVAC BIM Modelers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams across different time zones, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring model accuracy without in-person site visits. To overcome these, it's important to establish regular virtual check-ins, use collaborative BIM platforms for real-time updates, and follow standardized modeling protocols. Proactively seeking feedback and clarifying project requirements with team members also helps maintain project quality and alignment.

Job description

About the Position

As a Mechanical Virtual Designer at Power Design, you'll play a key role in bringing HVAC systems to life through detailed BIM modeling and construction documentation. Partnering closely with VDC leaders, project teams, and field operations, you'll develop coordinated, constructible models that drive efficient project execution.

In this role, you'll focus on mechanical system design and coordination-leveraging technology to identify clashes, optimize layouts, and ensure our projects are delivered with precision and quality. If you're detail-oriented, technically strong, and thrive in a fast-paced environment, this is an opportunity to make a direct impact on how our projects are built.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop accurate and detailed BIM models for mechanical (HVAC) systems, including ductwork, equipment, and associated components
  • Produce construction documents, fabrication drawings, and coordination packages aligned with project requirements and timelines
  • Collaborate with project management, engineering, and VDC teams to ensure models meet design intent and constructability standards
  • Participate in coordination efforts with other trades (Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Structural, and Architectural) to identify and resolve clashes
  • Apply quality control processes to ensure all deliverables are accurate, complete, and aligned with project standards
  • Utilize BIM tools to support layout, coordination workflows, and field installation planning
  • Assist in preparing documentation for field use, including layout points and coordination drawings
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with internal teams to support project milestones and deliverables

Here's What We're Looking For

  • A design and drafting modeling program guru who takes the time to do things right and focuses in on what's important in an ever-changing environment
  • At least three years of CADD experience working with programs like AutoCAD and Revit (BIM), including modeling and clash detection
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork design, and mechanical coordination practices
  • Proficiency in Revit (BIM), AutoCAD, and Navisworks; experience with Fabrication MEP and Bluebeam preferred
  • Ability to perform clash detection and participate in multi-trade coordination efforts
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and BIM execution plans
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality in all deliverables
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school education preferred
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with a team-oriented mindset
  • Demonstrates and upholds Power Design's core values: integrity, accountability, teamwork, innovation, and growth

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salaries offered
  • Flexible and hybrid work options available to support work-life balance

  • Exciting, award-winning workplace culture focused on employee appreciation, recognition, and fun
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance offered
  • Short and long-term disability plans
  • 401k with company matching and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) options available
  • Paid time off and company holidays provided
  • Discounts to a variety of services, mental and physical wellness resources, free Care.com memberships, and other perks given to all Power Design team members
