What is a remote healthcare software developer?

Remote healthcare software developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain software applications used in the healthcare industry, such as electronic health records, telemedicine platforms, and patient management systems, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. They collaborate with medical professionals and IT teams to ensure the software meets industry regulations and user needs. Their work helps improve patient care, streamline healthcare processes, and ensure data security and privacy. Remote positions allow these developers to contribute from anywhere, often using collaboration tools and secure access to healthcare networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote healthcare software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Healthcare Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or .NET), experience with healthcare data standards (like HL7 or FHIR), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems, HIPAA compliance, and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). Excellent problem-solving abilities, proactive communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote collaboration and understanding complex healthcare workflows. These competencies are crucial to building secure, compliant, and reliable solutions that meet the unique demands of the healthcare industry while working effectively in a distributed team environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote healthcare software developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote healthcare software developers often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective communication with cross-functional teams (like clinicians, QA, and product managers) due to differing time zones and workflows. Additionally, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations (such as HIPAA) and managing sensitive patient data securely can add complexity to development tasks. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, participate in regular virtual meetings, and stay updated on regulatory requirements. Leveraging secure development tools and following best practices for remote collaboration can also help maintain productivity and data integrity.

Job description

Software Engineer

Cerbo OptiMantra Remote (US), East Coast Hours Full-time

The Company

Cerbo OptiMantra is a healthcare technology company built for the practices changing how medicine is delivered. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Atlanta, our platforms serve functional, integrative, direct primary care, concierge, med spa, and behavioral health practitioners who need software that keeps pace with how they work.

Each platform is a purpose-built EHR and practice management solution. Cerbo is architected for clinical depth: deep configuration, protocol-specific workflows, and the kind of flexibility that holistic and functional medicine practices require. OptiMantra is structured for scale: multi-modality breadth, out-of-the-box readiness, and the operational infrastructure that growing practices rely on.

Together, the two platforms form a leading presence in a rapidly expanding market. Our practitioners are redefining what a patient experience can look like. We exist to give them the technology foundation to do that, at whatever size and pace they choose to grow.

The Opportunity

This is a full-stack engineering role centered on the back-end platform, with front-end and full-stack development forming a significant, recurring part of the work rather than an occasional task.

You will develop and maintain scalable, cloud-based software solutions, working closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to deliver features and improvements to our platform. You will sit in every phase of the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering through deployment and maintenance, and you will talk directly with the people who depend on what you ship.

The role is remote and supports EST hours.

What You Will Own
  • Front-end interfaces and user-facing features as a regular, ongoing part of the role, alongside back-end work
  • Full-stack applications built and maintained using Java and Spring
  • Clean, maintainable, and testable code
  • Code reviews, given and received, with feedback incorporated
  • Application deployment and ongoing maintenance
  • Staying current with emerging technologies and best practices
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other developers, so software solutions meet business requirements
  • Participation in all phases of the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering to deployment and maintenance
  • Communication with stakeholders, including management, customers, and other teams, so software solutions meet their needs
What We Are Looking For
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with evidence of increasing scope and ownership over time. Backend or full-stack experience in professional settings: APIs, services, middleware, or data layer ownership
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment
  • Eagerness to learn and grow under the mentorship of senior engineers
  • Experience with tools such as Git, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Experience working with one or more cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and familiarity with their services and APIs
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
AI Tool Competency
  • Demonstrated experience using AI coding assistants in a professional or project setting
  • Ability to write clear, specific prompts that produce useful outputs
  • Strong critical evaluation skills, able to identify subtle bugs, inefficiencies, or security issues in generated code
  • Understanding of AI limitations, including hallucinations, outdated patterns, and context window constraints
Nice to Have
  • Experience with Java and Spring
Compensation and Benefits
  • $140,000-$180,000 based on experience
  • Paid Time Off and company holidays
  • Comprehensive health, dental and vision benefits
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • 401k plan with matching company contribution
  • Ownership and impact in a fast-growing health tech company

Location: 100% remote within the United States. This position supports East Coast hours.

How Hiring Works Here

To apply for this role, you must create an account on provn.co and submit all required application artifacts. Resume only applications may be considered, but candidates who complete a full application are reviewed with priority.

With traditional hiring, referrals are king for getting an interview. But what if you don't have a referral? Applying with Provn is designed to help you get more interviews. Instead of sending a cold resume into an ATS and waiting, you will complete a challenge built by Cerbo and submit a short video walking through your approach. No time limit. No timers. No restrictions on AI usage. Show how you build with AI.

Why that works in your favor:

  • Provn is your proof layer for getting hired. Show how you build and ship with coding agents, your resume can never communicate this skill clearly.
  • Your judgement with AI is visible in your video presentation, which no "proficient with AI coding agents" resume bullet proves.
  • Your completed challenge puts you in front of the hiring manager, scored on your work. Get interviewed based on your project performance.

You will receive a round of feedback on your application challenge. Discover how our actionable recommendations can make you a measurably better candidate. No referral needed. No resume optimization sessions with Claude.

The resume is dead. Your Provn Application is what replaces it.

Cerbo OptiMantra is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Applications are open through October 4, 2026.
