Remote Healthcare Software Developer information

What are remote healthcare software developers?

Remote healthcare software developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain software applications used in the healthcare industry, such as electronic health records, telemedicine platforms, and patient management systems, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. They collaborate with medical professionals and IT teams to ensure the software meets industry regulations and user needs. Their work helps improve patient care, streamline healthcare processes, and ensure data security and privacy. Remote positions allow these developers to contribute from anywhere, often using collaboration tools and secure access to healthcare networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Healthcare Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Healthcare Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or .NET), experience with healthcare data standards (like HL7 or FHIR), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems, HIPAA compliance, and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). Excellent problem-solving abilities, proactive communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote collaboration and understanding complex healthcare workflows. These competencies are crucial to building secure, compliant, and reliable solutions that meet the unique demands of the healthcare industry while working effectively in a distributed team environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote healthcare software developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote healthcare software developers often encounter challenges such as maintaining effective communication with cross-functional teams (like clinicians, QA, and product managers) due to differing time zones and workflows. Additionally, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations (such as HIPAA) and managing sensitive patient data securely can add complexity to development tasks. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, participate in regular virtual meetings, and stay updated on regulatory requirements. Leveraging secure development tools and following best practices for remote collaboration can also help maintain productivity and data integrity.

Job description

Mayo Clinic's Genomics and Emerging Systems Unit is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain .NET-based applications and services that support genomics and clinical workflows.  These systems run in on-premises and cloud environments, including Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and integrate with other enterprise systems through secure APIs and web services. The Software Engineer will build and optimize services that handle complex laboratory workflows, clinical datasets, and high-volume genomic data processing. This includes ensuring services meet performance, reliability, data integrity, and quality requirements as data volumes grow.

The role collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to translate business, clinical, and technical requirements into maintainable software solutions that meet federal regulatory guidelines. Software Engineer responsibilities include designing and implementing services aligned to enterprise architecture, including cloud-ready APIs, data integration pipelines, and secure interoperability layers for systems that primarily support genomic data and laboratory workflows.

The engineer participates in Agile and DevOps practices using tools such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, Azure Pipelines, and CI/CD frameworks. Work may include deployment automation and configuration management for both on-premises and cloud-hosted applications. Development efforts leverage modern .NET technologies, cloud-native patterns, API-first design, and secure coding practices. Responsibilities also include maintaining comprehensive technical documentation, contributing to code reviews, and participating in advanced troubleshooting through log analysis, root cause evaluation, and data/system investigation.

This position requires effective communication with peers, leaders, and clinical partners across the organization. The engineer will develop working knowledge of laboratory genomics workflows, organizational processes, and customer needs while performing technical assignments with moderate guidance and increasing autonomy.
This is a full time, limited tenure, remote position funded for 2 years.  Mayo Clinic will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position including F-1 OPT STEM.
