What is a remote HBO software engineer?

A Remote HBO Software Engineer is a software developer who works for HBO (Home Box Office), typically focusing on developing, maintaining, and improving software products and services related to HBO's streaming platforms, applications, and backend systems. The 'remote' aspect means that these engineers perform their duties from locations outside of traditional office settings, often from home or other remote environments. Their responsibilities may include writing code, collaborating with team members virtually, fixing bugs, and integrating new features to enhance user experience. They often work with technologies such as Java, Python, cloud services, and streaming media frameworks. This role requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and effective communication for remote teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote HBO software engineer?

To thrive as a Remote HBO Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), experience with scalable software architecture, and a relevant degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems (such as Git) is typically required, along with possible certifications in cloud or software development. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear remote communication skills help engineers excel in distributed teams. These abilities ensure high-quality, reliable software delivery and effective team collaboration in a remote entertainment tech environment.

How does a remote HBO software engineer typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

As a Remote HBO Software Engineer, you'll frequently work with colleagues spread across various locations and time zones. Collaboration is often facilitated through regular virtual stand-ups, asynchronous communication tools like Slack or Jira, and scheduled video meetings to ensure project alignment. Being proactive in updating your progress, documenting your work clearly, and respecting others' working hours are essential practices. This approach enables effective teamwork and helps maintain project momentum, even when team members are not online simultaneously.

What you'll do at Cascade:

Serve the American Dream Through Attainable Home Ownership.

We are seeking a Mid-Level Software Engineer with full-stack development experience to join our product development team. This role is ideal for an engineer who is comfortable building features across the frontend and backend, collaborates well with senior engineers and cross-functional partners, and is eager to use AI-assisted development practices to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and delivery.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Angular, TypeScript, .NET Core, and modern software engineering practices, and is interested in applying AI tools thoughtfully throughout the development lifecycle while maintaining strong engineering judgment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop responsive, accessible user interfaces using Angular and TypeScript, following established design patterns and frontend best practices.
  • Build and maintain application features across the full stack, with emphasis on backend development using .NET Core and frontend integration in Angular.
  • Implement backend functionality using established architectural patterns such as CQRS, MediatR, and Onion Architecture under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Create, consume, and maintain GraphQL APIs, including working with schemas, resolvers, and efficient client-side data access patterns.
  • Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs, including client-side integration and resolver-level concepts (like VanillaCreme3.0 Libraries).
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, test creation, documentation, refactoring, and technical research while validating generated outputs carefully.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and senior engineering team members to deliver user-centered features with attention to quality, usability, and maintainability.
  • Write clean, testable, maintainable code aligned with SOLID principles and team coding standards.
  • Develop and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests that support reliable delivery through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Participate actively in code reviews by incorporating feedback, identifying potential issues, and contributing constructive suggestions.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to simplify code, improve test coverage, and streamline development workflows.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and use Jira for task tracking, sprint planning, and delivery visibility.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering roles.
  • Proficiency with Angular and TypeScript for frontend development.
  • Strong experience with .NET Core and C# for backend application development.
  • Working knowledge of CQRS, MediatR, Onion Architecture, or similar clean architecture patterns.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server, including writing queries, working with schemas, and basic performance considerations.
  • Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs, including client-side integration and resolver-level concepts.
  • Proficient with GitHub for source control, pull requests, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tools such as Jenkins.
  • Strong advocate for clean, testable code and automated testing practices across the development lifecycle.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Codex, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, maintainability, security, and alignment with team standards.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the mortgage industry, particularly loan originations, servicing, or related financial workflows.
  • Familiarity with regulatory, compliance, data privacy, or audit considerations in financial services.
  • Experience using AI tools to generate test cases, improve documentation, analyze legacy code, or support refactoring efforts.
  • Exposure to secure coding practices and responsible AI usage in enterprise software development.
  • Interest in improving developer workflows through automation, AI-assisted tooling, and better engineering practices.
