At OpenLiteracy, we're not content to watch another generation fall through the cracks. We built a 1:1, high-impact tutoring model that puts certified teachers directly in front of the kids who need them most, and we're proving it works. Our recently completed randomized control trial with Johns Hopkins puts us on track for ESSA Tier 1 STRONG evidence, the highest bar in education research. We're a small team doing work that matters, and we're just getting started.

The Role

The Data and Technology Manager supports the data and technical infrastructure behind our tutoring services. Reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, your first priority in this role will be re-architecting our current automated learning plan system to support the scale we've grown into as our tutoring program has expanded. This is a hands-on, high-impact project you'll revise how our Google Apps Script automations handle high-volume, simultaneous use, drawing on strong working knowledge of Google Apps and Google Apps Script. During the school year, you'll work hands-on with data management and support the redesigned learning plan approach that our tutors and staff rely on every day. This role sits at the intersection of technology and education, and requires someone comfortable both managing a suite of Google technical tools and working closely with data to support the people using it.

This role is ideal for a technically skilled professional who takes pride in managing clean, functional systems and is energized by knowing that the tools they support are directly improving literacy outcomes for children across the country.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Re-architecting and scaling our Google Apps Scriptbased learning plan system to support high-volume, simultaneous use
  • Managing and organizing attendance and learning data related to our tutoring service, ensuring accuracy and consistency
  • Building and maintaining dashboards and reports using Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio)
  • Identifying and resolving technical issues with the learning plan system and/or data management systems in a timely and organized manner
  • Supporting data integrity and ensuring systems function accurately and efficiently
Why Work With Us

Fully Remote. Work from anywhere in the U.S. with a flexible schedule.

Meaningful, Focused Work. You'll take ownership of a specific set of technical Google-based tools and data processes that directly support our tutoring program.

Collaborative Environment. You'll work closely with our team to keep our tutoring tools running smoothly and evolving to meet real needs.

Possibility to Grow. While this is a 1099 position to start, as we grow we imagine that this will be a full-time position. OpenLiteracy is a growing organization with an expanding product suite and need for data support. There's a natural runway for this role to deepen in responsibility and impact as we scale.

Required:

  • Demonstrated experience with Google Scripts and Google Apps (e.g., Sheets, Apps Script, etc.), including working knowledge of Google Sheets API's batch operations

  • Background in backend or API design outside of Google Workspace
