Software Engineer - Implementation

Software Engineer - Implementation

Job description

At Just Appraised, we're replacing outdated, manual local government workflows with modern software used by hundreds of government agencies across the United States. Our cutting-edge, AI-powered software, which leverages Natural Language Processing (NLP), replaces manual data entry to eliminate delays, backlogs, and errors. This work directly impacts how communities fund schools, infrastructure, and public services.
About the Role
We're hiring a Software Engineer - Implementation to design and deliver the technical integrations that make this platform work in the real world.
This role sits at the intersection of engineering, infrastructure, and real-world customer systems. You'll own technical implementations end-to-end-from discovery and system analysis through deployment and production reliability.
If you enjoy reverse-engineering systems, building integrations, and solving messy real-world technical problems, you'll thrive here.
We don't have QA teams, dedicated designers, or product managers. We believe the best software is built by engineers who are empowered to own the entire journey. Here, you aren't just executing on a spec; you are the architect, the designer, and the guardian of your code. You will scope the solution, build the interface, and support the production systems that keep local governments running. If you thrive in ambiguity and find "hand-offs" more frustrating than fulfilling, you'll fit right in. If you prefer a neatly defined roadmap and a team to catch bugs before they ship, we're likely not the right place for you.
What You Will Work On
  • Examples of problems our implementation engineers tackle:
  • Integrating with heterogeneous government databases and legacy systems
  • Reverse-engineering APIs and data structures with limited documentation
  • Designing scalable pipelines to ingest and normalize messy property datasets
  • Automating complex onboarding workflows across multiple customer environments
  • Building infrastructure that ensures reliability and performance across deployments
  • Translating real-world operational constraints into robust system architecture

Tech Stack
  • Backend: Java
  • Automation / Scripting: Python, Bash
  • Data: PostgreSQL, SQL
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Docker, Terraform
  • Developer Tools: GitHub, GitHub Actions, Linear, Claude Code, Cursor, CI/CD, automated testing

We understand that engineers may not be an expert in all of these technologies day one. We value engineers with a growth and learning mindset.
Your Role
  • Software Development: Contribute to and enhance our core Java codebase, emphasizing maintainability and clean design.
  • Scripting & Automation: Utilize scripting (e.g., Python, Bash) and automation tools (e.g., GitHub Actions) to streamline processes and extend system functionality.
  • System Integration: Design and implement robust integrations with third-party databases, APIs, and data storage systems.
  • Customer Infrastructure: Partner with remote customer teams to understand their architecture and design implementation plans that prioritize scale and reliability.
  • Customer Collaboration: Serve as a trusted technical advisor, translating complex customer needs into tailored, scalable solutions.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Work with cloud-based systems (AWS) to deploy, monitor, and scale applications, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security across customer environments.

What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of professional software development experience, with strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language (e.g., Java, Python, Ruby)
  • 2+ years of experience working with and optimizing relational databases (e.g., SQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with cloud services, preferably Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Demonstrated expertise in system architecture, API design, and complex integrations.
  • Ability to travel to client sites, with an estimated commitment of approximately 10% travel time year over year.
  • A resourceful problem-solver comfortable diving into unfamiliar customer databases and infrastructure to understand system mechanics.
  • Curious, self-directed, and energized by learning new technologies.
  • Customer-centric, driven by the real-world impact of solving meaningful, hands-on problems.
  • An exceptional communicator who can simplify complex technical concepts for both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.

Most importantly, we look for engineers who:
  • Enjoy solving real-world technical problems
  • Take ownership of systems and outcomes
  • Are curious, resourceful, and pragmatic builders

Benefits
  • Competitive compensation and stock equity plan
  • Comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Company sponsored pre-tax retirement savings program (401k)
  • A flexible work environment that supports working from home
  • Flexible PTO
  • Parental Leave
  • Home office stipend
