Overcoming these challenges requires strong communication skills, proficiency with digital collaboration tools, and the ability to interpret data from satellite imagery, GIS, and remote monitoring systems. Building strong relationships with on-site personnel and regularly participating in virtual meetings can help ensure that geotechnical recommendations are effectively implemented and project timelines are maintained.

What does a Remote Geotechnical Engineer in Mining do?

A Remote Geotechnical Engineer in Mining is responsible for assessing and managing the stability and safety of soil, rock, and groundwater conditions at mining sites, often working from a remote location using digital tools and data. They analyze geological data, design slopes, foundations, and tunnels, and provide recommendations to prevent geotechnical failures. Their work ensures the safety of mining operations, reduces risks, and helps maintain compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Geotechnical Engineer in Mining, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Geotechnical Engineer in Mining, you need a strong background in geology, soil mechanics, and engineering principles, usually supported by a degree in civil or geotechnical engineering and relevant certifications. SLC works on behalf of clients to support utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, thermal power, and other power and infrastructure projects. We evaluate and optimize technical, commercial, environmental, social responsibility, and financial aspects of the projects for a variety of clients.

This position will require you to perform high quality design and consulting services as part of multidisciplined project teams for challenging domestic and international, power and industrial projects. These engineering services include but are not limited to earth retention systems, deep and shallow foundation design, dam stability analyses and inspections, in-situ instrumentation and monitoring programs, subsurface exploration, seismic stability and liquefaction analyses, ground improvement, groundwater supply wells, and field oversight of exploration and construction activities.

Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Prepare geotechnical reports and calculations for conformity with project specifications.
  • Prepare specifications for subsurface investigations, deep foundations, ground improvement, earth retaining systems, monitoring wells, water production wells, and general earthwork.
  • Advise power project developers to support new utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage, thermal, and other projects;
  • Evaluate new power and infrastructure projects independently to support financing.
  • Develop technical reports for applicable audiences - including owners, developers, governmental agencies and committees, and financiers
  • Conduct occasional on-site quality surveillance of subsurface exploration programs, pile installation and pile testing.
  • Occasional domestic and/or international travel
