What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Geology position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Geology, you need a robust background in earth sciences, data analysis, and geological mapping, generally supported by a degree in geology or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, remote sensing technologies, and digital modeling tools, as well as relevant certifications like GIT or PG, are typically required. Strong self-motivation, effective written communication, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure that remote geologists can reliably interpret geological data, collaborate with dispersed teams, and deliver accurate insights for their organization.

What is a Remote Geology job?

A Remote Geology job involves conducting geological research, analysis, or consulting work from a remote location, rather than being physically present in the field or an office. Professionals in this field use digital tools such as GIS software, remote sensing data, and virtual collaboration platforms to study geological formations, assess natural resources, or provide expertise for industries like mining, oil and gas, and environmental consulting. Tasks may include analyzing satellite imagery, interpreting geological maps, and preparing reports. While fieldwork is sometimes necessary, much of the work can be completed using remote data sources and online collaboration.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Remote Geologist?

A Remote Geologist is often responsible for analyzing geological data, interpreting satellite imagery, creating digital maps, and preparing technical reports from a remote location. They may participate in virtual team meetings, collaborate with other geoscientists and engineers, and use cloud-based tools to share and review data. Daily tasks can vary but usually include reviewing new data sets, providing recommendations for exploration or environmental assessments, and ensuring quality and accuracy in all deliverables. This structure allows for flexible work hours while still requiring consistent communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

ICF is seeking a Florida-licensed Professional Geologist On-Call to join our Environment & Planning team. This role involves the application of geologic principles and interdisciplinary scientific knowledge to support environmental planning projects and resource evaluation, primarily performing Oil, Gas, and Mineral (OGM) assessments for less-than-fee easement acquisitions.

You will contribute to technical analyses that inform responsible land and resource use while helping clients navigate complex environmental and regulatory challenges.

About On-Call Employment with ICF: Due to the seasonal or project-specific nature of our environmental, disaster and emergency management work, ICF hires professionals as "On-Call" employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work as it becomes available, with the freedom to accept or decline hours. They can work on concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignment, provided there's no conflict of interest.

Ready to make a difference?

At the Environment & Planning (E&P) Division, we are driven by our commitment to do what's right-for our clients, our team, our communities, and the environment. Our diverse group includes planners, scientists, program managers, communicators, economists, technologists, and strategists. We value collaboration, curiosity, and dedication to excellence. These qualities define our culture and fuel our growth.

You'll work alongside a skilled team of environmental planners, regulatory experts, compliance specialists, biologists, and aquatic resource specialists. This position is based in Florida, with flexibility for remote or hybrid work within the state.

What You'll Do

  • Perform Oil, Gas, and Mineral (OGM) assessments to evaluate the presence, quality, and/or development potential of mineral resources (for both energy and non-energy resources) that underlie properties considered for less-than-fee acquisitions (agricultural/rural or conservation easements)
  • Evaluate information from the oil and gas permitting database and mines database maintained by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and local and regional geologic maps, nearby lithologic boring reports, and other geologic data maintained by the DEP-Florida Geological Survey (FGS)
  • Prepare a brief technical report summarizing the OGM assessment, including a GIS map exhibit (prepared by you or a GIS analyst) and supplementary information such as well-borehole data
  • Perform other geology-related tasks on an as-needed basis in support of the Environment & Planning (E&P) Division
  • Collaborate with project managers, technical specialists, and regulatory stakeholders

Please provide an updated resume aligned to the qualifications, skills and experience required.

Must Have Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Science, or a closely related field.
  • 5+ years of verified geological work experience in applying geologic principles to environmental, natural resource, and other projects requiring geologic assessments.
  • A current, active Florida Professional Geologist (PG) license.
  • 1+ years of experience in analyzing geologic, soil, and/or groundwater data to support technical reporting.
  • 1+ years of experience in preparing technical documents, reports, or environmental assessments.
  • 1+ years of experience using standard geologic or environmental data analysis methods and tools.

Additional Skills That Will Help You Succeed:

  • Experience supporting projects conducted under Florida environmental regulations
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary environmental or infrastructure projects
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines
  • Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro)
